I candidati per le categorie degli MTV Video Music Awards 2023 sono stati svelati. L’evento, trasmesso in diretta mondiale la sera di martedì 12 settembre 2023, sarà organizzato al Prudential Center nel New Jersey dove accoreranno fan da tutto il mondo per vedere le star più amate di sempre esibirsi in live incredibili.
L’Italia c’è, ancora una volta con i Maneskin che, senza sosta, continuano a mietere successi in ogni parte del mondo. Dopo il trionfo dello scorso anno che li ha visti vincere il premio Best Alternative (mai, prima di allora, conquistato da nessun artista italiano) con il brano “I wanna be your slave”, quest’anno si misureranno con i grandi del rock. E, infatti, la categoria per cui hanno ricevuto una nomination con “The Loneliest” è proprio quella di Best Rock, a cui concorrono con i Foo Fighters, i Linkin Park, i Metallica, i Muse e i Red Hot Chili Peppers. Damiano David e i suoi compagni sono entrati direttamente nel gruppo di quelli che possono essere considerati i mostri sacri della musica rock contemporanea. E mentre il loro nome entrava tra i sei candidati ai VMAs nella categoria Best Rock, sui loro canali social veniva annunciata l’uscita di un nuovo brano, “Honey! (Are u coming?)”. «Our new single coming soon», ha scritto la band romana su Instagram.
E se i Maneskin portano in alto, a soli vent’anni, i valori di un genere ricco di storia e personaggi incredibili che l’hanno popolata, le candidature dei VMAs portano con sé una rivincita del mondo femminile: questa, la quarantesima edizione, verrà ricordata come quella in cui trionferanno le donne. Tra le nomination, nelle diverse categorie, primeggiano proprio le quote rosa. Nella categoria Video of the Year, sono sei su sette (ci sono poi Sam Smith e Kim Petras con “Holy”, entrambi persone dichiaratamente non binarie). Nella categoria Artist of the Year (introdotta nel 2017), ci sono per la prima volta solo artiste donne. A conquistare il maggior numero di nomination è stata Taylor Swift: il suo nome appare in ben otto diverse categorie, sette delle quali insieme al suo brano “Anti-Hero”.
Una grande novità è rappresentata dall’ingresso di una nuova categoria di genere. Dopo il Latino e la musica K-pop - insieme ai generi Rock, R&B, Pop, Hip-hop e Alternative - quest’anno si parlerà anche di Afrobeats.
