Exciting TV thrillers to watch in 2019 on the BBC, Netflix, Channel 4 and Sky Atlantic
What to watch this winter...
Now that the party season is officially o.v.a.h, and we've finally stopped drinking Prosecco on tap, it's time to settle down on the sofa for some gripping TV watching instead. From brand new thrillers to returning darks dramas, here's what to tune into in 2019...
I Am the Night
Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is behind TNT's six-part dark noir thriller centred on the Black Dahlia murder case.
It follows the story of Fauna Hodel (India Eisley), a young woman given away at birth who begins to investigate the mysteries of her origin. She meets ruined reporter Jay Singletary, played by Chris Pine, who is haunted by a former case that unraveled him.
Together they embark on a sinister trail in Hollywood and get ever closer to a man involved in some of Hollywood's darkest debauchery, and possibly, its most infamous unsolved crime.
I Am the Night begins in January on TNT.
Baptiste
Happy news for fans of The Missing and Tcheky Karyo. The actor is back as enigmatic detective Baptiste for his own spin-off show. Set in Amsterdam, Baptiste's holiday appears to be cut short after yep, you guessed it, he's asked to assist in a missing person's case.
Tom Hollander stars as expat Edward, whose niece - believed to be a sex worker in the city's red light district - suddenly disappears without trace.
Baptiste begins on BBC1 later this year.
MotherFatherSon
Richard Gere and Sarah Lancashire star in Tom Rob Smith's drama about media mogul Max - estranged from his heiress wife (played by Helen McRory) - and his wayward son Caden who is primed to take over his empire.
But when Caden’s self-destructive lifestyle spirals out of control, the devastating consequences threaten the future of the family, its empire, and a country on the brink of change.
Tom's writing credits include best-selling novel Child 44, and BBC Two's Assassination of Gianni Versace.
Dublin Murders
The psychological crime thrillert blends the first two internationally bestselling novels of Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad series.
Each book is led by a different detective from the same team and their signature is an intense emotional connection between cop and crime.
This series, set during the height of the Celtic Tiger financial boom of the millennium, will focus on two murder investigations led by ambitious and charismatic Detectives Rob Reilly and Cassie Maddox, played by Killian Scott and Sarah Greene.
True Detective
Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali stars as Wayne Hays, a state police detective investigating a gruesome crime involving two missing children in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery which spans over thirty years.
Season 3 also features Stephen Dorff and Carmen Ejogo.
True Detective season 3 begins on Sky Atlantic on Sunday, January 13.
Killing Eve season 2
Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh are back as assassin and MI5 spy on an obsessive cat and mouse mission in Europe to track each other down.
New cast members include Nina Sosanya, Edward Bluemel and Julian Barrett. Fiona Shaw returns as Eve's charismatic boss.
Writer Emerald Fennell takes over from Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge to adapt the series based on the Codename Villanelle novellas by Luke Jennings.
Killing Eve returns to BBC1 in 2019.
Greyzone
Set in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Frankfurt, the Scandi thriller follows Victoria - played by Borgen's Brigitte Hjort Sørensen - who is taken hostage by terrorists. Before being kidnapped, the drone engineer managed to tell secret services about a potential terrorist attack in Scandinavia.
“After being boxed for too many years into the 'dead girl and moody detective' corner', Scandi drama is in the midst of a sensational phase of creative reinvention," Walter Presents co-founder and curator Walter Iuzzolino said in a statement.
Greyzone will air on Channel 4 in 2019.
Luther
Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson have returned for series 5 of the violent and dark detective crime thriller.
Luther is on the hunt for a masked serial killer, and we're never getting on a night bus again...
Luther continues tonight on BBC1 at 9pm.
Big Little Lies 2
Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are back in the sun-drenched coastal city of Monterey after *that* climatic cliffhanger with Alexander Skarsgard's Perry in season 1.
Meryl Streep will be joining the cast - no biggie - as Perry's mother who is searching for answers about her son in a new story written by author Liane Moriarty.
It seems like Skarsgard may be back too - although it's most likely he'll appear in flashbacks.
Big Little Lies returns to Sky Atlantic in 2019.
