We're always looking for the next TV show to fill our evenings with (even in a heatwave!), and thankfully, it sounds like Netflix have just the thing. From the creators of Stranger Things comes a new story about an ominous otherworldly threat, this time with the unlikely protagonists coming in the shape of retirement home residents. Sounds good, huh? Here's everything you need to know about The Boroughs, including the plot, the cast, and recent reviews.
What is The Boroughs?
The Netflix description explains, "in a seemingly perfect retirement community, a crew of unlikely heroes must stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don't have: time."
The story follows a misfit group of retirees-turned-superstars, who must uproot a dark secret at the heart of their sublime New Mexico retirement community (aptly named The Boroughs, of course.) While this is no laughing matter, the show is littered with witty dark humour, among the tense storylines and dark twists.
Now that Stranger Things has officially come to a close, the show's creators The Duffer Brothers have turned their attention elsewhere. Although The Boroughs was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Duffer brothers serve as executive producers, bringing their knowledge of the sci-fi genre to yet another project.
Who's in the cast of The Boroughs?
The Boroughs is stuffed full of recognisable faces, including:
- Alfred Molina as Sam Cooper, a retired engineer and he’s new in town
- Geena Davis as Renee, a retired music manager still living life to the fullest
- Alfre Woodard as Judy, a retired journalist whose instincts come in handy
- Bill Pullman plays Jack, the community’s most popular host for parties

- Rafael Casal plays Neil, Claire’s husband
What have people been saying about The Boroughs?
So far, The Boroughs has had brilliant reviews, with many labelling it "unmissable" viewing. Forbes tipped it as "redefining the sci-fi genre", adding that it successfully "blends science fiction, horror, and dark comedy as strange creatures begin stalking the neighbourhood at night."
The Guardian meanwhile gave it four out of five stars, saying, "It is, obviously, a fine cast and any fears that some of the best actors in the business are about to be wasted on hokum are soon laid aside by an intelligent, witty script and a plot that nods to all the most entertaining monster tropes without being slavishly devoted to them. There’s also an unexpected tenderness and wisdom underlying the whole [series.]"
