Squid Game: The Challenge has dropped the first batch of episodes on Netflix, and we're already obsessed. But what do the marbles at the end of episode five actually mean?

Following on from the 2021 K-drama which look over the internet, the streaming service have created a gameshow version of Squid Game. In it, over 400 players compete in a series of childhood games in an attempt to progress in the process, to be in with a chance of winning over $4 million. Yep, it's a lot.

The first game in the series is Red Light, Green Light, which follows the same format as the original drama, while contestants are then challenged with cutting out a dalgona cookie, and then a game of Warships.

At the end of episode five, the remaining players are rewarded for their hard work with a picnic, and sit down on the rugs with another player of their choice. Only the treat quickly turns into a trick, when they realise there are marbles hidden in the bottom of the wicker basket. But what do they represent?

What is the marble game in Squid Game: The Challenge?

In the marble game, each player is given a bag of marbles, and paired up with another player. In an allotted time period (in the original Squid Game, they are given 30 minutes, but it might differ in the game show version), the players must attempt to gain each other's marbles, and decide on a winner by the end of the time period.

Essentially, they can decide and agree on any game necessary to do this - whether tactical, or physical. Maybe they decide on a single throwing game, or an accuracy game, where they have to try and throw the most marbles into a bucket, or similar.

As this description explains, "Using your set of ten marbles, play the game of your choice with your partner. The player who manages to take all ten marbles from their partner wins."

Ugh, so tense.

The next batch of episodes of Squid Game: The Challenge drop next Wednesday 30th November.
