Netflix's The Adam Project just dropped, and people are already raving about it. From the incredible cast (Zoe Saldana and Ryan Reynolds is our fave new combo) to the genuinely funny comedy, and our soft spot for sci-fi, it's all pretty bang on. But if you needed a little ending explainer you're not alone. After all, we're dealing with time travel here, so things are likely to get a little *nuanced*.
First up, let's recap the film itself. The Adam Project begins with 12-year-old Adam Reed (Walker Scobell) discovering a wounded pilot hiding in his garage. Eventually it transpires that the pilot is grown up Adam (Ryan Reynolds) from years in the future, where time travel has just been made discovered.
Together - and along with older Adam's wife Laura (Zoe Saldana) - the pair embark on a mission to find their father Louis (Mark Ruffalo) and save the world, all the while not hugely getting along with each other, despite being versions of the same person.
Sci-fi, comedy and a little bit of heart truly is the entertainment sweet spot, so fans have been very excited for The Adam Project to drop on Netflix. Well, now that it has we'd hazard a guess you need a little recap on that ending.
Louis and Adam have almost achieved their mission, but, desperate not to have their futures changed, the Sorians jump in at the last moment in a bid to stop the father and son duo, even threatening to kill young Adam (therefore preventing future Adam from beginning the mission in the first place).
However, in trying to stop Louis and Adam, adult Maya Sorian accidentally destroys the reactor that makes time travel possible, and also inadvertently kills her younger self in her last desperate plea to kill Louis (bad day at the office for Maya).
In this moment, while the mission is accomplished, Louis begins to doubt the value of his time travel work altogether and knowing he will soon die refuses to accept help that would otherwise save his life. Instead choosing to spend time with his sons before they disappear from this part of time.
Louis realises he should spend more time with his family before his death while future Adam leaves his younger self with the knowledge that battling against his youth will ultimately make him unhappy.
Meanwhile, back in 2022 while young Adam is in a relationship with Ellie, we see him meeting his future wife Laura for the first time, described just as his future self said it would be earlier in the film. Meaning the whole thing ends on a pretty adorable, and hopeful note.
The Adam Project is available to watch on Netflix now.
