If your autumn watchlist is crying out for something seriously creepy, the BBC might have just delivered.
The Witch Farm is a new four-part supernatural thriller inspired by the story of an alleged haunting at an isolated farmhouse in Wales – and the BBC has now given us a first look at the series.
Gabrielle Creevy and Michael Socha lead the drama as a couple who leave London behind for what they hope will be an idyllic new life in the Welsh countryside. Spoiler: things do not go to plan.
And with a seriously stacked supporting cast and the creator of 2:22 – A Ghost Story behind it, consider us intrigued.
What is The Witch Farm about?
Set in 1989, The Witch Farm follows Liz and Bill Rich, who swap London for Heol Fanog, an isolated farmhouse in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons.
The couple are hoping the move will offer them and their family a fresh start, but their countryside dream begins to unravel when Liz becomes convinced she has seen a ghostly figure in their bedroom during a traumatic home birth.
And unfortunately, that's only the beginning.
As increasingly strange and unexplained things start happening around the house, Liz and Bill become convinced they might not be alone.
Their search for answers leads them deeper into the history of the farmhouse and the land surrounding it, while what they're experiencing begins putting some serious pressure on their marriage.
Honestly, one ghost sighting and we'd be straight back on Rightmove.
Is The Witch Farm based on a true story?
And here’s where things get even creepier: yes, The Witch Farm is inspired by a real story.
The drama comes from Danny Robins, the creator of paranormal podcast Uncanny and West End hit 2:22 – A Ghost Story, and is based on his BBC podcast of the same name.
The podcast investigated the alleged haunting of the real Heol Fanog farmhouse in Wales, where the Rich family reported experiencing a series of unexplained events after moving there in the late 1980s.
Their story eventually became one of Britain's most talked-about alleged hauntings.
The TV adaptation draws on real events, theories and accounts surrounding the case, although some characters, timelines and incidents have been changed for the drama.
So, no, reminding yourself "it's only a TV show" probably isn't going to help much with this one.
Who is in the cast of The Witch Farm?
Gabrielle Creevy, who you might recognise from Black Doves and The Guest, plays Liz, while This Is England and Showtrial actor Michael Socha stars as her husband Bill.
And they're joined by some very familiar faces.
Downton Abbey and Ted Lasso star Jeremy Swift is among the supporting cast, alongside Industry's Edward Holcroft and Peter Kay's Car Share actor Sian Gibson.
His Dark Materials star Lewin Lloyd plays Liz and Bill's teenage son Jonathan, while Game of Thrones actor Robert Pugh and House of the Dragon's Roger Evans also appear.
Basically, the cast is stacked.
When is The Witch Farm released?
We don't have an exact release date just yet, but The Witch Farm is expected to arrive on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year.
And considering we're talking isolated Welsh farmhouse + alleged real-life haunting + the creator of 2:22 – A Ghost Story, this has autumn viewing written all over it.
We'll be watching. With every single light switched on, obviously.
