If your watchlist is currently crying out for something dark, twisty and just a little bit unhinged, allow us to introduce you to Furious.
The new Disney+ crime thriller stars Shameless' Emmy Rossum as FBI agent Alice Black, who finds herself hunting a mysterious female serial killer targeting wealthy and powerful men. And, unsurprisingly, things get complicated very quickly.
The eight-part series only landed in the UK last month, but it's already getting people talking, with viewers praising its seriously dark premise and the cat-and-mouse dynamic at the centre of the story.
Intrigued? Here’s everything you need to know about Furious.
What is Furious about?
Furious follows Alice Black (Emmy), a former NYPD homicide detective who is now working for the FBI.
When a number of wealthy and influential men begin dying under suspicious circumstances, Alice becomes convinced the deaths are connected. And she's right.
The woman responsible is Catherine (Lola Petticrew), a calculated serial killer whose choice of victims gives this crime thriller a pretty major twist on the genre's usual formula. As Alice gets closer to discovering the truth, the pair become locked in an increasingly personal cat-and-mouse game.
And if the premise is giving you Killing Eve vibes, you're not alone. Both shows centre on two women on opposite sides of the law whose fascination with one another makes the relationship between hunter and hunted far more complicated than it initially seems.
Basically, this isn't exactly cosy Sunday-night viewing.
What are viewers saying about Furious?
The series has certainly got people talking since its release, while critics have highlighted just how dark and provocative the story gets.
The Guardian described the series as a feminist take on the detective drama, praising the way it flips many of the conventions we're used to seeing in serial-killer stories. Meanwhile, The Times gave it four stars and highlighted the morally complicated dynamic between Alice and Catherine.
And with the story tackling everything from revenge and justice to female rage, trauma and power, there's a lot more going on here than simply trying to work out whether Alice will catch Catherine.
Consider us intrigued.
Who is in the cast of Furious?
Leading the cast is Emmy as FBI agent Alice Black. And yes, if you spent the 2010s watching the American version of Shameless, you’ll immediately recognise her as Fiona Gallagher.
Opposite her is Say Nothing star Lola Petticrew as Catherine, the woman Alice is desperately trying to track down.
The cast also includes:
- The White Lotus actor Jake Lacy
- Scoot McNairy
- Quincy Tyler Bernstine
Rossum went pretty hard on preparing for the role, too. The actor gained 10lb of muscle and trained with a retired FBI agent before filming began.
Where can you watch Furious?
Furious is available to watch on Disney+ in the UK.
The series premiered on 27 July with its first three episodes, with the remaining instalments arriving weekly. There are eight episodes in total, so there's plenty to get stuck into – but you can't quite binge the entire thing just yet.
Honestly, probably for the best. We might need a breather between episodes.
