If there's one thing the British public is going to lap up (no, not pints as soon as the temperature hits 18 degrees... Although, that too), it's a detective drama. From Touching Evil to Lynley, and of course, Line of Duty, it's safe to say we're obsessed.
And thankfully right now, the TV channels are giving us exactly what we want, with the BBC commissioning a season two of Rebus just yesterday [3rd June.] Three cheers for everyone's favourite dark and moody detective returning to our screens!
Alongside the announcement, here's everything you need to know about Rebus season 2, including cast and potential plot lines.
When was Rebus season 2 announced?
On Wednesday 3rd June, BBC announced a new season of Rebus had been commissioned, and filming was already underway.
Richard Rankin from Outlander reprises his role as the titular character, and shared a statement to celebrate the news, commenting, "There’s a real sense of excitement about stepping back into Rebus’ world.
"What I’ve always loved about Rebus is that he’s such a richly complex character. He’s fiercely driven, deeply flawed, endlessly determined and often at war with himself. Returning to him, there’s still so much to discover, with many, many layers of the character left to explore. This next chapter promises to challenge him in ways that I’m really looking forward to bringing to life."
What will Rebus season 2 be about?
In a statement announcing the new series, which is written by Gregory Burke and based on the best-selling books by Ian Rankin, the BBC said season 2 will continue "to explore Rebus’s complex world as he navigates Scottish crime and personal conflict. Series two explores the links between violent criminals and the professional bourgeois world of law and finance, where police sometimes fear to tread."
Intriguing! But also... ambiguous.
Who will be in the Rebus season 2 cast?
Rebus will see a whole new host of actors joining the cast, although their characters are currently being kept under wraps. Guest cast include:

What is Rebus season 2's suspected release date?

As production has only just started in June 2026, perhaps viewers can expect a May 2027 release date for the new series? A bit of time to wait, then!
