Our love of Call the Midwife shows no sign of slowing down and thankfully it doesn't have to as there's a whole movie coming our way soon. And now series creator Heidi Thomas has just teased a major detail about where the movie will be set. One clue: it's not Poplar.
The BBC One TV series is peak Sunday night comfort watching, and follows the lives of the midwives of Nonnatus House and their patients in the east end of London. Having been on our screens since 2012, the show has a dedicated loyal fan base, who will be pleased to discover there is another season already confirmed, a prequel series and a movie all in the works.
Season 15 is currently airing on BBC One and by the end of the season we're expected to be getting a teaser of where the movie will be set, as Thomas wants to take the beloved cast and place them in an unfamiliar location. It's not unusual for the series to take a trip overseas as the nuns complete missionary work, with the most recent Christmas special being set in Hong Kong and season six also saw the midwives travel to South Africa to help in a clinic.
So where will the Call the Midwife movie be set? Here's everything we know about that and more.
When was the Call the Midwife movie confirmed?
Back in May 2025, the BBC revealed exciting plans for a Call the Midwife movie to be heading to the big screen, along with a prequel series.
Heidi Thomas, the creator and writer of the series, said of the movie: "As the classic Call the Midwife series moves further into the 1970s, it also seems the perfect time for our much-loved regulars to take a short break from Poplar and test themselves in an unfamiliar landscape.
"The rise in hospital births, and changes in the NHS, have clipped their wings, and this is their chance to take flight and work out what really matters. Whilst the location of the film remains top-secret, I can say it is going to look absolutely fantastic on the big screen!”
What will happen in the Call the Midwife movie?
Right now it's not clear exactly what will happen in the Call the Midwife movie, however we do of course know the nurses and nuns will be doing their utmost to help the community they're in and likely to be delivering lots of babies.
Thomas has revealed one potential location of the movie could be Australia, however there are also two more possible locations the series could take place.
Speaking to the Radio Times, Thomas teased: "It's not so much doubts [about Australia], but there are three options. One is Australia, and there are another two."
As for when we'll find out the other two options, Thomas confirmed Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) will mention them all in the season 15 finale, which is likely to take place on 8 March.
Who will be in the Call the Midwife movie?
We still don't know for sure the confirmed cast for the movie, however it's likely many of our favourites will return. The one person we're not sure will feature in the movie is Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan.
In the most recent episode we discovered Sister Monica Joan is suffering with chronic kidney disease and seems preparing herself for death. We're keeping our fingers crossed she pulls through, but it doesn't seem likely she'll feature in the film.
