Warning: Contains major spoilers to Channel 5's Missed Call.
Channel 5's latest original drama Missed Call premiered this week and had many viewers hooked. But despite some believing they'd worked out who the "culprit" was within the first five minutes, it turns out some fans' theories were barking up the wrong tree. At least the major branch of it, that is.
Let us explain and give a quick recap too... The five-part TV thriller kicked off on Monday at 9pm, setting up the story of British teenager Katie Gleason heading off on a school exchange in southern France.
Katie's single mum, Sarah, ended up getting a missed call from her daughter and shortly after, Katie stopped replying completely. Sarah immediately rushed to Saint-Michel in a bid to find her, but was met with a extremely shady response from everyone she encountered - whether it be Katie's host family, the police or anyone else lurking about town.
But one person who some viewers believed to be guilty before the episode had even reached five minutes in? Rupert Graves' character of Jason Bradley.
One X user wrote: "Five minutes in, Rupert Graves is the culprit #missedcall." And echoed: "I thought that too, but what was the 'tell' which made us think it?"
In the series, Graves plays the role of Jason Bradley, Sarah's relatively new boyfriend. He's tasked with driving Katie and her classmates to France. And to be fair to those viewers, there were several clues which pointed towards him being the shady character of the series.
However, with the finale of the series having taken place tonight, those viewers will now be swiftly realising that despite Jason being shady, he certainly wasn't the shadiest of them all nor the "culprit" in Katie's disappearance - actually ending up a hero, ish.
However, with the ending of the five-part drama stuffing as many twists and turns as it possibly could into the last two episodes it would be fair to have been left a bit bamboozled - so let us break it down for you.
Missed Call ending explained
The penultimate episode sees a body found in the woods - not Katie's, but a teenager named Odile who'd vanished five years earlier.
The final episode then sees the police delve further back into the case of Odile and viewers quickly realise that all the people we thought were dodgy - whether it be Jason Bradley, Andrew Taylor, Mark Jones or Xavier - were all simply distractions.
Sure, they're certainly not the sort of blokes you'd necessarily want to associate with, but as to whether they were the true "culprit" in Katie's disappearance? Wah wah.
Instead, it turned out it was actually Odile Lambert's mum, school cleaner Audrey who had taken Katie. Why? Because she was fuming over the lack of investigation into her own daughter's disappearance.
Determined to spur authorities on to revisit her missing daughter's case and take it more seriously, Audrey believed if a British student went missing they'd be more likely kick their asses into gear and eventually reopen their investigation into Odile's disappearance. So naturally, after running into Katie looking worse for wear in the road one night looking very similar to Odile, she decided to abduct her.
And while the plan is certainly not one to be encouraged or tried at home for that matter, to be fair to Audrey, it worked a charm. Odile's killer was later exposed as police officer Jerome Ricard.
Ricard killed Odile in a drink-driving accident but then covered up the crime, destroying all evidence in a bid to avoid jail and be around to care for his sick wife.
However, we all know one lie and cover-up turns into more - a trap which apparently the men in this series find it easier to "fall" into. And when Ricard's former police partner and friend Serge Henin found out about the drink-driving incident and threatened to report him, Ricard decided to commit actual murder and fit Henin up for Odile's death for good measure.
When confronted by Virginie, Jerome turned to blackmail too, saying he wouldn't expose her father Andrew as having been questioned over a historic serious sexual assault investigation. However, with the charges having been dropped and Virginie being a good person, she wasn't about to give in.
Jerome pulled a gun, apparently ready to commit murder number two, but thankfully Sarah was in the back of her car live-streaming the whole event, authorities on their way.
So, viewers' theory about Jason was ultimately proven wrong as he wasn't the "culprit" to Katie's disappearance. A liar and multiple cheat, yes. And he certainly had an inappropriate relationship with Katie.
But given he came back to help Sarah and Katie and ended up getting shot and dying in the process? Well, as his poor wife said: "Coming to help [Sarah] find [Katie] was probably the most decent thing he's ever done."
All episodes of Missed Call are available to stream on Channel 5.
