We've all been there, shoving our Ronseal-coloured knuckles up our sleeves and hoping no one comes too close to us for fear or being overpowered by the stench of a strange biscuit smell.
Thankfully though, when we've experienced a fake tan disaster it's been at something like our leavers ball, where once your parents have finished making you pose in the front garden (under the watchful eye of your nosy neighbours), it's easy to hide your orange stains.
So take a moment for Selena Gomez then, who, in a new video with Vogue shared her 2018 Met Gala fake tan nightmare.
"I want to tell you a little funny story about self tanner," she nervously began. "For the Met Gala I was getting ready and we wanted to add some colour, so put on some of this tanning lotion and it looked really beautiful and very even."
Exactly how every fake tan disaster starts...
"As the evening kept going on it was getting a little darker and darker, and I didn't notice it," she continued through nervous laughing.
Everyone's clicking on...
"I'm at the Met Gala, one of the most prestige, beautiful events and I'm walking trying to look all beautiful and I look at a photo of myself when I sit down and I'm completely orange."
When I say we've all been there Selena, I mean we've all been there. We've all been tango'd at least once in our lives.
Trying to control her laughter, Selena continued, "I was like this is going to be terrible because I'm going to get eaten alive about this. So I had my security take a video of me because my first reaction was just to get the hell out of there.
"So I'm running to my car and I'm literally hauling arse to get to my car and I put it [the photo] online and said 'this was my reaction after seeing my Met Gala photos'".
Hey, if you don't laugh about it you're gonna cry.
Just another reason we want to be Selena's BFF.
