There are beauty founders, and then there is Trinny Woodall: a woman who can tell you you're applying bronzer incorrectly with the devastating efficiency of a secondary school headmistress, yet somehow leave you feeling deeply empowered by it. In an industry still flogging the idea that women should spend their lives trying to Benjamin Button themselves into oblivion, Trinny's approach feels radically sane.
Her beauty philosophy isn't about looking 25 forever, but about looking alive – even if you did get four hours of sleep and cried in an Uber last night. Through candid Instagram tutorials and gloriously unfiltered beauty chats, the Trinny London founder has become the internet's most stylish beauty confidante, dispensing practical advice on everything from cream blush to confidence, all while making getting older feel exciting.
Here, we rounded up five of her beauty lessons we can all learn from the mogul herself – from embracing a bold lip to finally stopping worrying about what other people think.
The red lip hack
For many people, red lipstick feels wildly intimidating and, perhaps worse, high-maintenance. But Trinny regularly reminds her followers that it need not be! In the video above, she shares her foolproof application technique, from defining the Cupid's bow for a cleaner line to building colour from the centre outwards. More notably, however, the MUA shows how a touch of the same red lipstick tapped onto the cheeks can pull a whole look together, creating a soft, cohesive flush so the lips feel intentional rather than isolated. Streamline your makeup routine, one red lippie at a time!
Do whatever makes you feel good (and stop worrying what people think!)
Trinny has little patience for the idea that women should age according to someone else's rulebook, making her a woman after my own heart! Speaking to Good Housekeeping, she criticised the phrase "age gracefully", arguing that beauty should be about the personal choice rather than outdated expectations. Whether it's Botox, bold makeup or embracing grey hair, her philosophy is simple: do what makes you feel good. She's also spoken openly about how liberating ageing can be, especially once you stop obsessing over other people's opinions. As Trinny put it, "people probably aren't even thinking about them." A freeing reminder for anyone wasting energy worrying what strangers think of their eyeliner.
Always blend upwards
One of Trinny's signature makeup tricks is simple: always blend upwards. In an Instagram tutorial on contour, blush and highlight placement, she explains that makeup should lift the face rather than drag it down. She applies contour lowest, blush slightly above and highlight on the highest point of the cheekbone, saying: "Always keep it up. If you think of the line, as a woman of a certain age, you don't want to do anything below that line." It's subtle, but surprisingly transformative!
It's never too late for skincare
In a video interview with Lorraine Kelly, Trinny emphasises that it's never too late to start a skincare routine – and that good skin isn't about timing but adaptation. She explains that skincare should evolve with different stages of your life, with your routine, products and ingredients all adjusting to what your skin needs at any given moment. As she puts it: "It's never too late [to start a skincare routine]. There's so much now that is good, so I never think it's too late to start. It's just different stages in life, you need different things for your skin." She explains further with menopause, noting that by this stage, women may have lost a significant amount of collagen, which is why targeted care becomes even more important. Sure, that cleanser you've been loyally using since the early 2000s may still technically "do the job", but Trinny's lesson is that skin doesn't stay static – so your routine shouldn't either!
Even lips can be achieved in a few easy steps
If you want to create the illusion of a fuller pout but don't want to commit to injectables, Trinny shares how to achieve the look in a few easy makeup steps. Using her Lip Reset Kit, she starts at the Cupid's bow, where she advises building structure first: "Tip number one is about the attention to the Cupid's bow. We're going to go straight across to build a triangle of volume." She describes the motion almost like a "zip wire" across two peaks, before creating a subtle inverted triangle to bring fullness to the centre of the lips and rebalance proportions. She finishes by blending and adding a lip oil for a soft, hydrated finish. Hello, even pout!
