For the better part of four years, Britney Spears has worn her hair in long, honey-blonde mermaid waves – a partnership as dependable as the one man who reappears in my Hinge likes every six months... The difference? Britney's waves inspire joy; his appearance mostly inspires a biannual jumpscare.

Which is why her latest hair transformation on celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton's Instagram stopped me mid-scroll.

Gone are the beachy bends that have become synonymous with the singer in recent years, and in their place sits a poker-straight blowout so glossy it could probably reflect sunlight back into space. Physics, hey.

Here's a look at Britney's hair before:

Aaand now, after:

Sure, the look is less of a dramatic reinvention (read: no bob chop here, folks) and more of a love letter to Britney's turn-of-the-millennium glory days, but that doesn't take away from the shock factor. Finished with a subtle side part, the 'do transports us straight back to the year 2000, mentally rummaging through a CD wallet for 'Oops!... I Did It Again', and wondering whether low-rise jeans were ever really the villain.

Everyone's clicking on...

Of course, if you're going to trust anyone with a Y2K hair revival, Chris Appleton is the man for the job. The celebrity hairstylist's client roster reads like a guest list at the Met Gala, with names including Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Dua Lipa. And speaking of the Met Gala, he was also the architect behind Kim's famous 24-hour transformation into a blonde Marilyn Monroe for the 2022 event. Proof that when it comes to hair, few people understand the power of a cultural moment quite like Chris.

Just when we thought we knew Britney's signature look, she served up another hair moment worthy of pop culture folklore. Oops, she did it again.
