On Tuesday night, in the LuEsther Hall of New York’s iconic Public Theater, Cosmopolitan hosted a major first: the inaugural live taping of Blind Date. The event showcased a lineup fitting for any Cosmo event: magic, a game show, and, of course, the Blind Date special guest King Princess, fresh from her evening performance as Lisa Rowe in Girl, Interrupted at The Public Theater.
Cosmo kicked the evening off with some magic…literally. Magician and mentalist Josh Pele stunned the audience with impressive feats, like pouring chocolate milk out of a sealed soda can and a t-shirt trick you’d just have to see to believe. Josh, we learned, can perform in 13 languages, a skill he harnesses to connect with cultures across the globe.
Natalie Shine—host and creator of The Big Silly Trivia Game, a live pop-culture trivia show for the girls—took the stage for Act 2, engaging the crowd in a shockingly difficult round of dating trivia. Gus Dapperton and Harry Hill competed in the final round for bedazzled Cosmo t-shirts. We were blown away by their encyclopedic knowledge of Carrie Bradshaw’s and Taylor Swift’s dating histories.
Throughout the night, guests made their way to a concession stand fit for a Broadway show. GoPuff hooked us up with snacks like BjornQorn, M&Ms, Crunch bars, and Nerds Gummy Clusters. Oh, and Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers helped prepare the Cosmo team and talent for the evening ahead. Yum.
Cosmo’s inner circle showed up and out for the event, and, thanks to photographer Stacey Zirka of HumansThroughMyLens, we won’t forget who was there. The most decorated freestyle skier in Olympic history, Eileen Gu, sat front and center. Also in attendance were artists, authors, and creators including Internet Anthropology, Clara Perlmutter, Veronika Vilim, Emily North, and Maxxx Pleasure. Mackenzie Thomas even went home with a limited-edition Cosmo t-shirt from her big trivia win. It goes without saying that it was a vibrant crowd—perfect for a night with King Princess. Be sure to catch this episode of Blind Date when it goes live on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts on July 9. We promise you won’t want to miss this one. And tune in to season 4 of Blind Date when it premieres on August 3.
The Public Theater will continue to host Girl, Interrupted through July 12. Girl, Interrupted is a stage adaptation of the 1993 memoir by Susanna Kaysen and the 1999 film starring Winona Ryder, Elisabeth Moss, Brittany Murphy, and Angelina Jolie. Although the story has been around for over three decades, Girl, Interrupted remains as relevant as ever, both as a nostalgic film and as a pertinent commentary on mental health. As King Princess aptly put it, “Sad girls don’t go out of style.”
