- Josh Radnor recently revealed where he stands with the rest of the How I Met Your Mother cast 12 years after the show ended.
- The show ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014, and even inspired a spin-off, How I Met Your Father, in 2022.
- Josh compared their time on the show to the kind of friendships you make in college.
A lot can happen in 12 years. At least, that’s what Josh Radnor says has gone down since his breakout sitcom, How I Met Your Mother, ended back in 2014. The show followed his character, Ted Mosby, as he navigated dating in New York City alongside his four best friends, who were played by Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan, Cobie Smulders, and Neil Patrick Harris.
As for where the stacked cast stands now? Josh opened up about whether they’re still bonded after filming nine seasons of the fan-favorite show across 10 years during an appearance on the Half the Picture podcast with Billy Barnell on August 14. The actor admitted that the HIMYM cast isn’t as tight as they seemed on-screen, saying that they’re “not even a little bit” close.
“I don’t mean that in any dramatic way; it’s just we had Neil on the podcast, and he and I had a really interesting conversation about some of the tension we had on set,” he explained, referring to the rewatch podcast he co-hosts with HIMYM creator Craig Thomas. “That was like fascinating and kind of healing.”
He then opened up about his relationship with Jason, who he hasn’t “seen in a very long time,” but texts “every once in a while when something, like, reminds us of something funny on set.”
“Cobie, we had on the show twice. So I’ve seen her mostly on Zoom,” he continued, adding that he still “has love for all of these people” he worked with in the 2000s. “Aly was at my wedding. But I haven’t, I think, seen her since.”
He likened their experience on the show to college, where people share a “very intense time” and then go separate ways.
“People really wanna believe that me and Neil and Jason are, like, hitting bars in New York City together,” he shared, though that doesn’t seem to be the case.
And, while fans want the HIMYM cast to be a family IRL, Josh (kind of) agrees.
“It’s a little more like family than friends in that you don’t get to choose your family,” he explained. “We were cast, we didn’t choose each other. Acting is a lot like little love affairs that you have, and then you move on.”
If you ask me, it just sounds like he and the rest of the gang are due for some beers at MacLaren’s Pub.
