The Hardacres is back on Channel 5 for season two, returning to 1980s Yorkshire for a story that explores whether money can ever buy happiness. The show is set across the grand manor house (so can money buy happiness? Yes?) and the fishing docks - but where is The Hardacres actually filmed? Here's what you need to know about the stunning season 2 filming locations, as well as some that popped up in season one.
The Hardacres filming locations for season 2
While the show is set in Yorkshire, much of the filming actually took place in Ireland, thanks to its rolling countryside and beautiful heritage buildings.
Cabinteely House in Cabinteely Park, Dublin
Cabinteely House, a restored 18th-century country mansion built in 1769, was used as the fictional Hardacre Hall in Yorkshire. In real life, the 18th-century country house can be found set in 45 hectares of parkland in Cabinteely Park, which is south of Dublin.
Claire Cooper, who plays Mary in The Hardacres for season 2, has spoken out about how nice it was to return for the second instalment, saying, "I love filming in Ireland, there’s something so special about it. Being back with the cast feels like coming home."
"They’re such a talented, kind group of people, and our crew are absolutely sensational. It sounds cliché, but we really are one big family off-screen, albeit with a slightly less dramatic dynamic!"
Dublin
They also sourced other Georgian and Victorian locations around Dublin to double up as Yorkshire. Speaking about filming in Dublin, set designer Derek Wallace said: "Back in the 1800s, Dublin was the second biggest city in the Empire. It was London and then Dublin.
"So we do still have a lot of Georgian infrastructure and Victorian infrastructure, and we have a lot of furniture still. The buyers were tasked with finding as much as they possibly could here in Ireland... almost 90 per cent we sourced here in Ireland."
Actor Liam McMahon, who plays Sam Hardacre and is from Northern Ireland, said: "Ah, it’s home. I think I can answer this question better than most because I got to come home and do this. I think that the themes are universal so for it to be filmed in Ireland and not Yorkshire doesn’t really matter. Basically at that time in the 1890s everybody had the same struggles going on everywhere."
Bray Harbour, Wicklow
A Facebook posts from 2023 shows Bray Harbour in county Wicklow set up for the filming of the fishing dock scenes. The harbour is an extension of the River Dargle, which flows along its Northern wall.
The official synopsis for season 2 teases: "Mary and Sam embrace wealth and opportunity, but their children begin forging identities that challenge expectations. Mary champions adult education for dock workers, while Sam expands the family business amid a looming recession, uncertain if Joe is ready to succeed him.
"Determined to prove himself, Joe’s impulsive choices threaten his future. Liza, recovering from romantic disappointment, is swept up by a chance encounter with a handsome stranger, while Harry’s plans to abandon school are transformed by an inspiring new tutor.
"Ma forms an unexpected bond but as some relationships blossom, others are strained. As tensions rise, Lady Imelda Hansen arrives at the Fitzherbert’s home with a dangerous agenda, forcing the Hardacres to unite or risk losing everything."
The Hardacres season 2 will premiere on Thursday 14 May at 9pm on 5
