The Traitors returned tonight with one of the wildest twists we've ever seen on the show - A SECRET TRAITOR.

After picking her three Traitors, the show's host Claudia Winkleman picked another Traitor - whose identity was kept secret from the Faithfuls and known Traitors, as well as us at home.

This is the first time the show has had a Traitor who viewers didn't know about either, so naturally there were a lot of questions.

Here's everything you need to know about the new twist, including when their true identity is likely to be revealed...

How does the secret Traitor work?

At the beginning of season four, Claudia revealed that for the first time ever there'd be a "Secret Traitor". This person will wear a red cloak and won't meet with the other Traitors in the Traitors Turret. Instead, they'll have a different power and will produce a murder shortlist each night that the other Traitors will have to pick from.

Speaking ahead of the series, executive producer Mike Cotton explained: "I think what's really interesting is that the Traitors are used to having all the power and for once they don't. There's a murder shortlist and they can only murder from that list. They don't have free reign over who to kill. So I think what's going to be really interesting to see is how they navigate that and if they can they work out who the Secret Traitor is and can they then manipulate that situation to their advantage?"

Does the secret Traitor know who the other Traitors are?

They do and are the only player in the game who is aware of everyone's identity.

Mike revealed: "They're the only person that holds all power. The viewers are kind of Faithfuls at the start there, because the secret Traitors is the only person that knows the other Traitors' identities and who all the other Faithfuls are."

How long will the Secret Traitor’s identity be hidden?

Viewers will have to wait some time to see how and when the Secret Traitor will be unveiled, but Claudia revealed that the Secret Traitor will continue shortlisting the list of murder victims for the other Traitors, until they "earn their power back".

"As Claudia says in the show, the Secret traitors' reign will continue until they earn the power back," Mike explained.

Oh we're itching to find out!

Is the Secret Traitor lying to viewers?

Another question many of us had while watching is whether viewers are also being tricked by the Secret Traitor. Are their VTs just a big lie?

"They're not lying to us in the interviews," Mike said. "The interviews that you see there, what they would have said would have been the same whether they were Faithful or Traitors. So, that's for the viewers to pick up on the clues."

That said, surely there's some heavy editing at play to keep us guessing or throw us off the scent?

Why did the BBC introduce the Secret Traitor?

The Secret Traitor was introduced to season four, to give viewers a chance to essentially 'play the game'.

"Lots of people always say, 'How can the Faithful never know?' my body said, how can the have the faithful never know. How can't they work it out?' So, here's my response to see what it's like," Mike explained.

Will the Secret Traitor be in the US version of the show?

While the new twist is currently at play on the UK series, it's not yet known if this will travel overseas.

"I'm not going to comment on the American version," Mike said, adding that while the shows share missions, they often have "different twists" so fans of the show will have to "wait and see".

The Traitors airs on BBC One at 8pm.
