Calling all fantasy fans, the wait is finally over, as Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is back for season two later this week on 29th August. Excited as we are for the return of Galadriel and co, we can't help but wonder if this is the last time we'll return to Middle-earth or if a third season is on the horizon?
The Rings of Power debuted in 2022 and is essentially a prologue series to the original Lord of the Rings, set thousands of years before the events of the famous novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. As we head into season two, Sauron has returned and is working on rebuilding his strength and cunning plans so he can oversee the creation of the rings of power.
So before the second series kicks off later this week, here's what you need to know about the potential third season (crosses fingers it's happening).
Has The Rings of Power season 3 been confirmed yet?
Right now there's been no official word from Prime Video a third season of The Rings of Power is going ahead.
However, and this is a big however, the series showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have given a pretty big hint it's happening.
When speaking to Tech Radar about the possibility of a third season ahead of the release of season two, McKay said: "We're working on it [and] that's all we can say."
Well that's definitely not a no, right?
Who could star in The Rings of Power season 3?
Ok so this all depends on what happens in season two of The Rings of Power and who sadly will die in the upcoming series.
But given everything we know about the story of The Lord of the Rings (and who is still alive in the book and movies), we would most likely expect to at least see the following cast members return:
- Morfydd Clark as Galadriel
- Charlie Vickers as Sauron
- Robert Aramayo as Elrond
- Benjamin Walker as Gil-galad
- Maxim Baldry as Isildur
- Daniel Weyman as The Stranger
What might happen in The Rings of Power season 3?
Well, again this all depends on what is covered in the second season and how the season wraps up.
The end of season one saw Galadriel discover Halbrand was actually Sauron in disguise but kept his identity a secret from the other elves. She encouraged them to make three rings so that they could stop Sauron's plan. And the final scene of the series sees Sauron overseeing Mount Doom in Mordor.
So it's likely the war against Sauron is only going to build up as season two approaches and likely continues in a potential third season.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two will be available on Prime Video from 29th August
