'Boyfriend bob?' I can hear the disapproval; I can see the sour faces; I can smell the fear (read: judgment). But, dearest reader, surrender your pre-conceptions and please, allow me to explain.
We're all clued up on the boyfriend jean, right? The relaxed, menswear-inspired trend that has continued to dominate the better half of the 2020s. Now, apply that same philosphy but to hair. Think: Less stealing your boyfriend's cropped cut, more borrowing his relaxed ~aura~. And just like the rise of boyfriend jeans, the boyfriend bob is set to dominate the beauty realm for summer 2026, à la Penelope Cruz's fresh cut. It's chic, low-maintenance and a total crowd-pleaser!
Need more convincing? Well, we picked the brains of Philipp Haug, expert hairstylist and co-founder of Haug London Haus, who shared everything there is to know about the boyfriend bob – from what defines the cut to how it's best styled. So, keep scrolling for your new season refresh awaits...
What is the boyfriend bob?
The boyfriend bob is a relaxed take on the traditional box bob or classic bob – key word: relaxed, just like the boyfriend jean! As seen on Penelope Cruz, it's cool, relaxed and easy to wear. Though unlike the traditional, "it’s a longer length, think chin or below, which allows for more texture," Philipp says.
Who is the boyfriend bob best suited to?
The best thing about the boyfriend bob is not its chic look nor its low-maintenance upkeep (more on that below), but its ability to suit everyone. "In keeping with its relaxed style, the boyfriend bob will suit everyone; you have room to play with the length a little, so it suits every face shape and will work on all textures," Philipp explains. "Unlike shorter bobs, which can be wide on curly hair, it’s long enough to keep some weight in the curls so they won’t jump up too much."
Penelope wears her boyfriend bob with a heavy fringe that blends into the side, and Philipp says this style is really well-tailored to every face shape.

How to maintain your boyfriend bob
Low-maintenance hairstyles for summer? We think yes! I mean, ain't no body got time to be faffing about with 17 different updos when all that time could be spent lounging in a pub garden. Philipp recommends either blow-drying your boyfriend bob with a round brush for a little volume or leaving it to air dry; "it’ll look fantastic with a bit of natural movement and texture," he says.
And not only that, but because it's not a geometric cut, Philipp says you can go a little longer between appointments; "the bluntness means it’ll grow out really well."
How to style your boyfriend bob
A great hair look – boyfriend bob and beyond – starts with a solid foundation. "I’d recommend the Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Air Whip Flexible Mousse for volume at the base; it gives thickness and volume with a more gentle hold and no crunchiness," Phillip says. "The key to nailing the boyfriend bob is relaxed, lightweight products."
Continuing, Philipp recommends finishing off the look with a round brush to tuck the ends under slightly. "It’s not a sleek, shiny look, so you can finish with more matte products to get that effortless tousled finish."
Et voilà! A hairstyle so stylish your boyfriend could never!
