Earlier this week, in the height of the heatwave, I watched a TikTok of a woman dramatically cutting off her ponytail using what appeared to be craft-safe scissors (and pure emotional conviction, TBH). By morning, the comments section was flooded with like-minded women declaring their newfound love for the short bob.

Such is the power of summer: one degree above 22 and suddenly everyone wants to look like they've just divorced a French film director (not a proven bob fact, but one I, personally, deem to be true... the aesthetic just works!). Enter: The great Bob Renaissance of summer 2026.

From the shaggy little rebel that is the bixie to the artfully chaotic, undone bob, this season's cuts are all about less [hair] is more. But don't just take my word for it; we spoke to professional hairstylist Samantha Cusick – whose clientele includes none other than the likes of Zoe Sugg and Mel C – who shared her expertise on the six bob haircuts set to dominate salons this summer.

The Italian bob

Ah, the Italian bob. If she were to have accompaniments, it would be oversized sunglasses and an espresso martini. See the vision? Well, allow me to explain more...

According to Sam, the cut's appeal lies in its sharpness and precision. "The Italian bob is defined by its blunt, clean lines and minimal layering, sitting anywhere between the jaw and the collarbone," she explains. "It's not undone, it's not messy, it's sleek and intentional and quietly powerful." And then there's its versatility. Worn glossy, it feels expensive and polished; air-dried, it still manages to look deeply chic. Not to mention that on finer hair, Sam says the blunt ends create the illusion of extra thickness.

You could say it's the kind of cut that deserves a summer in Sicily... even if your closest brush with Italy is an aggressively cold Aperol spritz in Hackney Wick.

Everyone's clicking on...

The undone bob

On the polar opposite end to the Italian bob lies the anti-perfection bob, AKA 'the undone bob', as Sam calls it. This is thanks to its texture and movement. "It sits around jaw to collarbone length, but the layers make it feel so much lighter and more lived-in," she explains.

Best of all, the undone bob doesn't require a whole load of maintenance, and crucially, doesn't collapse under the pressure of humidity. In fact, it thrives in the heat... "Summer is when this cut really comes into its own because it works well with a bit of natural texture and humidity rather than fighting it," Sam says.

Adding to this, Sam says that "it suits round and square face shapes really well because the layers and fringe create softness and length." And it's ideal for those with wavy or curly hair; "the texture just does all the work for you!"

Every trend cycle eventually produces a haircut designed specifically for people who genuinely cannot be bothered, and as one of said people who cannot be bothered, thank God for that.

As Sam explains, it's ideal for anyone who wants "all the impact without the commitment to going properly short." This is because it sits just at or above the collarbone with a soft graduation through the back that gives it shape and movement without you having to style it very much. "I've had so many clients come into Samantha Cusick London saying they want something that feels different, but they're nervous about going too short," Sam says. "This is always my answer; It's the gateway bob, and once people have it, they're obsessed.

Got thick hair in particular? This is the best cut in the lineup for you as the graduation removes weight without sacrificing length. And in the summer heat, you sure know that makes such a difference.

The K-pop bob

Aaaand we're back to precision with this very blunt, very straight K-pop bob. Sam points to the influence of Korean beauty culture as a major reason this style has grown steadily in popularity over the years. Defined by its ultra-blunt shape and clean centre parting, it's a "high-impact, graphic look."

What makes it particularly appealing is how easy it is to maintain once the initial cut is in place. "The bluntness means it holds its shape really well – all you have to do is blow it out smooth, and it just sits."

As you can probably guess, if you've got straight hair, this is a great choice for you as it will require minimal styling – though it can work on anyone! All you need is a trusted straightener, some heat protectant and a lil patience, and you're good to go.

The French girl bob

I'm sure you're well acquainted with the French bob because at this point, we've waxed lyrical about it so relentlessly that a Parisian woman could trip over a traffic cone (in the 6th arrondissement, mind you) and we'd still describe them as effortlessly chic.

Alas, Sam describes this bob as softer and more romantic in comparison to the Italian bob. "Think flippy ends, a little movement, a fringe that looks like it just happened rather than something you planned."

Sam believes that its popularity comes from people "craving something that feels softer and more feminine after a few seasons of very sharp, structured cuts." And we couldn't agree more. Summer 2026 = fairy vibes only!

The bixie

Finally: the bixie, aka the lovechild of a bob and a pixie! A little bit shorter than the traditional bob, this cut sits above the jaw with texture and layers through the top and crown. "It's cool and effortless, making for the perfect summer 2026 energy," Sam says.

What makes it so perfect for summer is its breathability. "It's off the neck, it's light, and takes minutes to style," Sam says, advising clients to use a little bit of serum through the ends for the perfect finish.

Best of all, Sam says that it works across a range of hair types. On curly hair, however, she says it's particularly stunning – this is "because the curl adds volume and shape through the crown naturally."
