I've had a bob for the majority of my life (minus the scraggly boob-length stint circa 2015, but alas, t'was short-lived), earning me self-appointed veteran status. And with such a badge of honour comes recognition for the struggles, too. Now, there aren't many that accompany the bob; after all, its short length takes most of the legwork out of styling. But when said length passes the low-maintenance threshold, and into how the hell do I manage this in-between mid-point stage, you're met with the age-old debate: to cut, or not to cut?
But fear not, for I come bearing good news: the grown-out bob doesn't have to be a beauty purgatory. In fact, with the right style and tweaks, this in-between length can be incredibly versatile. Enter: The layered butterfly bob.
The butterfly bob is inspired by the longer butterfly haircut – a style that went viral on TikTok in recent years. As hairstylist Danielle Garner describes, "the butterfly haircut is a layered, voluminous cut designed to give the illusion of shorter hair while keeping length." This original version keeps more length overall, whereas the butterfly bob in question brings that same layered volume into a shorter, more manageable shape.
Continuing, Danielle says that the style "mimics the soft, wing-like movement of a butterfly." This means it's designed to feel light and airy, with layers that create soft, natural movement. The look "typically includes: shorter, face-framing layers (curtain bangs or a soft fringe), longer, tapered layers through the back to build shape and volume, and a light, wispy finish, avoiding a blunt, heavy edge."
Crucially, it's these soft, graduated layers that help disguise the awkward mid-length stage of a bob as they add shape and movement, preventing hair from feeling heavy or grown-out.
So, instead of booking an emergency chin-length chop, just add a few face-framing layers to your already grown-out bob and watch the magic happen. Work smarter, not harder, folks.
