Nothing – and I mean nothing* – seems more appealing on a 30-degree summer's day in England than chopping off long, thick hair and never looking back. Sensible, liberating, deliciously cool. Just gone.
So, reader, if you've landed on this page in search of a new style for the [unbearably] hot season that has been thrust upon us – or, you simply want to re-up your existing 'do – I welcome you with open arms (and an air hug because I ain't doing all that touching malarkey in this heat).
Now, there are many (and I mean many) variations of the bob that can work for the season of sunnier climes, but for 2026, we're touting the soft swing bob as one of the best. It's volumising, textured and low-maintenance, in equal parts.
Interest piqued? I thought as much! Continue reading to find out more about what defines the cut and who it's best suited to, as well as inspiration pics galore to accompany you on your next salon appointment.
*Fine. Mini Milks, those Shark Chill Pill fans TikTok is relentlessly trying to sell me, and the idea of lowering myself into an ice-cold plunge pool are all pretty strong contenders in the 'cool me down immediately, or I'll flap uncontrollably' stakes. But hey, nothing beats a great haircut and a lil bitta neck breeze...
What is the soft swing bob?
"The soft swing bob is a face-framing bob with more layers around the front with a textured, blunt finish at the back to make it look more lived-in," explains expert stylist Mason Josh at Josh Wood Atelier. You could say it's a softened, more wearable rendition of the stacked or graduated bob – which is where its appeal lies.
While the blunt shape through the ends keeps the hair looking healthy, the softer layers around the face stop it from feeling too sharp or severe. So, movement and texture are definitely on the cards!
Who is the soft swing bob best suited to?
Mason tells me that, just like Pizza Express' Pollo Pesto Pasta (my comparison, not his), the soft swing bob is a crowd pleaser; "It suits most face shapes as the face framing makes it really versatile." This is because, as Mason tells me, the front layers can be tailored depending on your preferences. You can opt for a curtain bang to highlight the eye area or longer, choppier layers to soften a strong jawline – the world soft swing bob is your oyster!
In terms of hair texture, Mason says that the style can work across virtually all hair types, too; however, customisation is key. "It would suit all hair types, but work with your stylist to make it work for you," he advises. "If you have curly, coily or fine hair, make sure not to over-texturise it."
On finer hair, maintaining weight through the back helps create the illusion of fullness, while on thicker or curly textures, subtle shaping around the front can enhance natural movement.
How to style the soft swing bob
When it comes to styling, Mason lives by the old adage: less is more. "It's supposed to look lived in and feel relaxed," he says. "Aim for soft blow dry for smoother textures and a scrunch dry or diffuse for curly textures."
In other words – and all that I'm hearing is – let your hair do its thing! Low-maintenance styles FTW!
