For many tween girls, Wild Child was practically a rite of passage. It taught the value of female friendship, the art of reinvention and, perhaps most importantly, the transformative power of a great haircut. Because when Poppy Moore swivelled around in that salon chair to unveil glossy brunette lengths and a side sweeping fringe, time briefly stood still.
Now, stay with me here… I, at the ripe age of 26, recently had my Poppy Moore moment after taking the plunge with baby bangs – though, admittedly not my first hair transformation rodeo, and probably not my last. But if your own transformational hair era is still pending, there’s no better excuse than the arrival of summer. And if ever a season to go shorter, in particular, this is it! Less hair to style in the heat? Count me in.
So, to bring you all the short hair trends for the summer of 2026, we tapped the brains of hairstylist Samantha Cusick, who shared all her expertise on the short haircuts of summer 2026.
All that's left to do? Sought out a suitable love interest (or if hot girl summer is more your thing, seasonal fling)… Freddie Kingsley, WYA?
The Italian bob
Blunt and sharp (OK, Miranda Priestly!!), the Italian bob is a style of minimal layering that sits somewhere between the jaw and the collarbone. And the best bit? As Sam tells me: "It's one of those cuts that looks incredibly polished but actually asks very little of you once it's done." Signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours, Italian bob.
This, she tells me, is because the clean line holds its shape brilliantly, meaning it air-dries well – no heat styling required!
"We've had so many requests for this at Samantha Cusick London this year, and it crosses hair types really well," Sam says, making it an all-round crowd-pleaser for the summer season. "On straight hair, it's graphic and precise; on wavy hair, it softens slightly and becomes a little more romantic – either way it works beautifully."
In terms of face shape, Sam says that it works best on those with oval, narrow and heart-shaped faces. "The blunt line is particularly brilliant for fine hair because it creates the appearance of real density and thickness."
The French girl bob
From one European country to another, with this bob, we land in France. I mean, Parisian chic, oui?! Sam describes this look as a little softer and more romantic, making it perfect for the floaty summer season. Think: Soft ends, a little movement, and a brow-grazing fringe that looks completely uncontrived.
"I've been doing a lot of these at Samantha Cusick London lately, and clients are just obsessed," Sam tells me. "There's something about it that feels like a proper treat-yourself haircut; perhaps because it's feminine and flattering or maybe just really beautiful on so many different people!"
And when it comes to face shape and hair type, Sam says it works brilliantly on oval and heart-shaped faces, as well as straight to wavy hair. Not to mention those with finer hair types, as the texture adds movement and character. Add a lil spritz of texture spray and you're good to go!
The bixie
2026 has seen the rise of the bixie – and no, don't get your dragons in a twist; this isn't another mythical creature from your favourite fairy smut, but a super sophisticated in-between bob-pixie chop. Sam tells me she expects an even greater surge in popularity over the summer season because it's "short enough to feel light and breezy but long enough to still have real styling options," not to mention the texture through the crown – "this gives it so much personality," she adds.
Got curls? Look no further because the bixie works with your natural volume and texture, making for effortless styling.
The micro fringe
Not to make this about me (Rue, is this play about us?), but my recent foray into fringe territory makes a case for this short haircut... Although, credit where credit is due, I have been seeing it all over my TikTok FYP. Trend alert!
"A micro fringe – or baby bangs if you'd rather opt for a slightly longer short fringe – sits high on the forehead and completely transforms the face," Sam explains. It sure ain't not for the faint-hearted, but Sam says on the right person, it is absolutely stunning and feels very summer 2026 energy.
Fringes are all about creating balance, and so Sam tells me this looks "works best on oval and oblong face shapes." And when it comes to hair type, it sits most easily on straight hair." Although if you have more of a wave or kink and your fringe needs coaxing into place, Sam recommends using a straightener and a couple of no-crease hair clips.
The indie pixie
Meet the pixie's rebellious sister, the indie pixie. "This style is defined by loads of texture, choppy layers through the top and crown, and that effortlessly cool, undone quality that is so wearable right now," says Sam. AKA, it's a pixie that feels like it belongs at a festival or a gallery opening rather than something overly polished or precious.
Sam says that her salon clients who have been nervous about going short but love that lived-in, textured aesthetic are discovering this cut and completely falling for it. And it works particularly well in the British summer time beacuse it's cool in the heat and so easy to style (read: more time in the pub garden, less in your bedroom in front of the mirror).
Just like the bixie, Sam says that this works best on those with wavy and curly hair types; "the natural texture just elevates the whole thing."
The androgynous crop
Thought the micro fringe was bold? Well, the androgynous crop is a statement and one that's certainly giving bangs a run for their money. "It's having a huge moment right now because there's a real appetite for something that feels strong and directional," Sam says.
Day to day, Sam tells me that it is "genuinely one of the easiest cuts to live with," – which is a win for the low-maintenance among us. "The short back and sides need nothing, while the tops may, if anything, need a tiny bit of texture cream." And in the summer heat, that kind of simplicity is absolutely everything.
Angular and oval face shapes, you're up because this cut will suit you most. But when it comes to hair type and texture, there's more wiggle room thanks to the short lengths. "It can work on straight to wavy hair types where you get the most definition and control through the top," Sam says.
