If you're looking to stay inside and keep out of the sun this heatwave, then we have just the show to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Starring Martin Compston and Sophie Rundle, The Nest is a layered drama about a happily married couple who are struggling to conceive and the pact they make with the young woman they hire as a surrogate.
It's full of intrigue, twists you won't see coming and complex themes of power, exploitation and desperation. Here's everything you need to know about it.
What is The Nest about?
The Nest is a five-part drama that came out in March 2020, just at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, so there's a big chance you missed it the first time around.
The series follows extremely wealthy married couple Emily (Rundle) and Dan (Compston) Docherty, who end up meeting 18-year-old Kaya who asks to be their surrogate after discovering their fertility issues. As The Nest progresses Kaya ends up moving in with Emily and Dan, and the pair soon discover the woman carrying their child has a background of dark secrets.
When the show was released six years ago, it was highly praised by reviewers, with Radio Times commending Rundle and Compston's performances, saying: "Rundle is wonderful as the grieving, blindsided Emily, refusing to admit defeat, while Compston hits just the right balance between portraying a doting husband, and the promise of something darker and more ruthless."
And The Observer praised the show's writer Nicole Taylor's skills in the balance she creates in the script saying of her skills, "Nicole Taylor is the writer behind the Bafta success Three Girls, and it shows: in this, she’s given us not just a twisty, whose-motive-is-it-anyway thriller but also, so far, a pointed exploration of the rights and wrongs of surrogacy. Of womb-ownership."
Who stars in The Nest?
The Nest is lead by Martin Compston as husband Dan Docherty, who you'll of course most likely recognise for playing DI Steve Arnott in Line of Duty. Alongside him playing Dan's wife Emily is Sophie Rundle who is best known for starring in ITV's After The Flood and Peaky Blinders.
Playing the role of Maya, the 18-year-old the pair ask to carry their child is Mirren Mack, who starred in Sex Education before The Nest, and has since gone onto star in Mary & George, Miss Austen, and The Witcher: Blood Origin.
Also in the cast is James Harkness, Fiona Bell, Liz Ewing, Shirley Henderson, David Hayman, Bailey Patrick and Katie Leung.
Where can I watch The Nest?
Despite airing on BBC One back in March 2020, the show has since found a new home and is available to watch on Disney+.
