With the ability to purchase almost any item we fancy in just one click (thanks Amazon), and have it delivered the very same day (thanks again, Amazon), it's interesting that so many random royal items still fetch thousands, and we mean thousands, of pounds at auction. But, we're not talking about your standard Royal Family memorabilia here, like china plates, newspaper clippings, biscuit tins, teacups or even commemorative stamps, (which, by the way, some people quite literally spend their entire lives collecting). Nope, we're talking about the really random royal items. Like, really, really random.

From decades old wedding cake (yep, you read that right, decades) to toilet paper stolen from Buckingham Palace, it seems there really is no item too obscure when it comes to Royal Family memorabilia. In fact, you can even get your hands on a pair of knickers dating back to the 1800s – although we're pretty sure those ought to be in a museum somewhere, not pride of place in somebody's living room. But, that's just our opinion.

With that in mind, we decided to take a look at all the curveball royal memorabilia that has been put up for sale – and, spoiler alert, there's not one single commemorative stamp in sight. So whether you're a Royal Family fan looking for ideas for your Christmas list (it's never too early for a Christmas list), or you're just in the mood for a bit of a laugh, then scroll on...

In 2021, a 40-year-old slice of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding cake was put up for auction. The slice was originally gifted to a member of the Queen Mother's household in 1981, and was preserved for decades using cling film.

How much did it sell for? Although the item was initially expected to reach no more than £500 at auction, it actually sold for nearly four times that amount, with a winning bid of £1850.

See a photo of the v expensive slice here.

Surprise, surprise! Another slice of cake. This time it was a decade-plus old offering from William and Kate's wedding, which was put up for sale by a former royal household staff member... and which was immediately tucked into by the lucky auction winner. Gulp.

How much did it sell for? Sold to a businessman named Jay for a cool £1,700, after being handed the goods he took a bite and reportedly declared: "I'm going to have a little bit of royalty inside me forever... Mate, it's actually mega, you know. It's really, really nice. I might have some more."

A pair of Queen Victoria's bloomers

Clevedon Salerooms

Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901, but it wasn't until over a century later that a pair of her bloomers went up for sale. The bloomers, which were passed down from Susan Heard, a lady's maid in London, had a hole down the middle to make using the bathroom a whole lot easier. Genius.

How much did they sell for? The bloomers sold for £1000 at auction – much more than your average pair of knickers from Primark.

Despite having never met, Kate Middleton and Princess Diana both signed this red velvet hat. Although it's unclear where the hat actually came from, who owned it or how both Royals signed it, it still proved popular when it was put up for auction in 2017.

How much did it sell for? Unfortunately there's no record of how much the hat sold for. No price tag usually means pretty spenny though, right?

Clearly, out-of-date cakes are a hot commodity when it comes to Royal Family memorabilia. In 2015, nearly 68 years after their wedding, a slice of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's wedding cake went up for auction.

How much did it sell for? The slice, despite being quite obviously inedible, sold for a massive £560. Ick!

From her classic sweater and bike shorts combo to *that* black dress at the White House, Princess Diana was quite the style icon before her tragic death in 1997. It makes sense then that this adorable elephant tie was put up for auction in 2013.

How much did it sell for? James Grinter, managing director at auction house Reeman Dansie, told the BBC they'd sold the tie for £3,200.

Being Head of State, the Queen had plenty of important documents and letters to send out on the reg. Understandably then, a lot of them became computerised as her reign went on, although the Queen did still hand sign a few special ones here and there.

How much did it sell for? Auction house Reeman Dansie's James Grinter, told the BBC: "Most Christmas Cards From Elizabeth II are signed by autopen, but ones with genuine signatures can be worth up to £500."

Stolen toilet paper from Buckingham Palace

Alright, so this one wasn't quite put up for sale, but the backstory means it's well worth a place on this list.

In 2019, The Crown star Olivia Coleman revealed that, on a trip to Buckingham Palace, her husband stole a roll of toilet paper. "My husband stole some loo roll just to say we got it from Buckingham Palace," she told The Times. We wonder what the Queen had to say about that?

Perhaps we'll see the loo roll make its way onto eBay in the next few years, or maybe it's already made its way down the toilet...

Auction house Guernsey listed jewellery owned by the late Princess Diana for sale back in 2021, most specifically a pair of earrings and matching necklace known as the 'Swan Lake Suite'. However, the listing was later removed before the auction could get underway and reports say the jewels were snapped up by a "prominent" museum.

How much did it sell for? Unfortunately the final price was kept hush-hush due to the sale happening via a pre-auction private treaty, but we can imagine it was a pretty penny indeed. After all, the necklace alone contains more than 17 marquise- and round brilliant-cut diamonds...

Prior to getting her big acting break in Suits, the Duchess of Sussex spent a short while working as a 'briefcase model' on the US version of Deal Or No Deal. Her lucky number? 24.

How much did it sell for? Err, well actually, according to this post on the Heritage Auctions site, it didn't sell at all due to lack of interest... Oh.

A Range Rover once owned (and driven) by Prince William and Kate Middleton went up for sale in 2021. The couple were spotted inside the car everywhere from Scotland to Australia, and no doubt was padded out with plenty of safety features given its VIP drivers.

How much did it sell for? An astronomical £50,625 (sales fees included), said to be twice the value it would have fetched without its special royal heritage.

The Princess of Wales wore this blue and black designer number during a royal tour of Italy in 1985. She opted for the velvet dress for a dinner hosted by the Mayor of Florence during the tour.

How much did it sell for? A stunning $1.15 million (£908,000), around 11 times its asking price - and breaking the record for the most expensive of Diana's dresses ever sold. It was expected to sell for a more modest $100,000.
