Much like any other family, the British Royals like to give one another endearing nicknames. But because they don't make a habit out of using them in public (well, what with being royals after all), we've done some digging to find out all the pet names you'd be likely to hear flying around the dinner table at Buckingham Palace...

1

On her Spotify podcast, Archetypes, Meghan Markle revealed that her mum has the sweetest nickname for her.

"My mum still calls me Flower," the Duchess of Sussex said of Doria Raglan's nickname for her. "I’ll be a 41-year-old Flower. That’s fine."

How sweet!?

The Queen Mother's nickname for Queen Elizabeth

Elizabeth is a strong Royal name, but until recently a lot of people won't have known that Queen Elizabeth II didn't always go by that. In fact, growing up she was known to her mother and the rest of her immediate family as 'Lilibet'. It was a name adopted by Prince Philip for his wife throughout his life, and grandson Prince Harry chose to use the sweet moniker for his daughter with Meghan Markle. Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, born 4 June 2021, and goes by 'Lili'.

Rumour has it, the nickname originally came about after Elizabeth couldn't pronounce her own name as a child, but it may also be because her mother was called Elizabeth, so it would have avoided any confusion there.

Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI, famously used to say about his two daughters: "Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy."

Princess Charlotte's nickname for Prince William

Most children call their father 'daddy', but not the Cambridge kids, it seems. In a card shared on Instagram to mark Mother's Day earlier last year, Princess Charlotte's adorable handwriting could be seen addressing her late grandmother, 'Granny Diana'. In the card, five-year-old Charlotte also wrote: "Dear Granny Diana, I am thinking of you on Mother's Day. I love you very much, Papa is missing you. Lots of love, Charlotte".

Aside from being the cutest little message, we're also obsessed with the fact that Princess Charlotte calls her dad 'Papa' which is possibly the most endearing, posh thing ever. Love it.

We got a rare insight into the dynamic between husband and wife Meghan and Harry when the Prince did an unprecedented 'tour of LA' interview with James Corden. When James spoke to Meghan on Harry's phone, the Duchess asked her husband, "Haz, how’s your tour of LA going?"

James Corden responded by saying basically what every outsider was probably thinking upon hearing it: "Haz? I didn’t know we were calling you Haz now."

To which Harry responded, "No, well you’re not my wife, so..."

Meghan also let it slip that she calls Harry "love" during an episode of her podcast, Archetypes.

As highlighted by series 4 of The Crown, King Charles III and Camilla had some... interesting nicknames for one another, long before they ended up getting married. The couple apparently first began calling one another 'Fred' and 'Gladys' went they dated in their twenties, inspired by characters from BBC radio’s 'The Goon Show'. But as they went on to date other people, the secret pet names became useful for their private correspondence.

The nicknames were so fondly used by the pair, that The Crown shows Charles giving Camilla a bracelet with the initials 'GF' for Gladys and Fred engraved on it, shortly before his marriage to Princess Diana.

Prince Harry is clearly a doting dad to one-year-old Archie, and it's obvious in the way he describes his young son. In a video call Harry took part in during the pandemic, in celebration of the Rugby Football League's birthday, the Prince was asked about how his son is enjoying his new life in California. Answering that he's "loving it," the royal went on to explain that he particularly appreciates all the outdoor space it has given the family.

"I am just unbelievably fortunate and grateful to have outdoor space and to see my son be able to be outside, because I know so many people just haven't had that opportunity in the last five months," said Harry. Then, he went on to discuss family and work life, which was where he slipped in the adorable nickname for Archie.

"Our little man is our number one priority but then our work after that is the second priority and we’re just doing everything we can to do our part to make the world a better place," he said.

Our little man!! It's enough to make your heart melt.

Mike and Zara Tindall have been married for over a decade, so there's been plenty of time to concoct the odd nickname or two. And Mike revealed one of them when he recorded an episode of the House of Rugby podcast from home.

While he was speaking, Mike and Zara's youngest daughter Lena walked into the room and began talking. Explaining what was happening to co-host Alex Payne, Mike, inadvertently revealed his nickname for wife Zara.

"Sorry, Lena's just on fire at the moment, she's never quiet. I did just send Zed a message, going 'Shush please,' so she's obviously moving from somewhere," he said. Zara in public, Zed at home.

To mark baby Archie Harrison's first birthday, Meghan and Harry, shared a video of their one-year-old enjoying story time in aid of charity, Save The Children. In the video, which was filmed by Prince Harry at the couple's home in California, Archie can be seen sitting on his mum's knee as she reads him the book Duck! Rabbit!

About halfway through, as Archie starts to get a bit wriggly on her lap, Meghan whispers to her son, "Let's go to the next page, look Arch", revealing the shortened version of his name that they use. In response, Archie's attention is brought straight back to the book, and he cracks an adorable smile as his mum makes duck noises in his ear.

So, Arch it is, these days. Cute!

Meghan Markle's other nickname for Prince Harry

It's very clear from how tactile they are with each other how much Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are in love. But while being interviewed for their documentary in 2019, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Meghan shared another sign of endearment for her husband, in the form of a personal nickname she gives him.

While speaking to interviewer Tom Bradby, Meghan began, "I've said for a long time to H...". At that point she paused, looking coy, before adding between giggles: "That's what I call him." Sweet.

Parents Meghan Markle and Prince Harry might have been calling Archie 'Baby Sussex' before he was born, but that obviously changed when he arrived in May 2019. When Archie took part in his first royal engagement, meeting Archbishop Tutu in Cape Town, Meghan was overheard calling her son "Bubba".

While playing footage from the visit, PEOPLE evidently had the volume up loud, because the publications reports Meghan says, "Say hello! Hello, hi," before realising her baby is dribbling, at which point she says. "Oh, Bubba!"

Harry, ever the doting dad, then swiftly wipes away the drool. These guys.

Prince William's nickname for Princess Charlotte

Footage of the Cambridge children from 2019 showed them exploring mum Kate Middleton's 'Back To Nature' Chelsea Flower Show garden. In the video, George, Charlotte and Louis can be seen swinging on the rope ball, dipping their toes in the stream, and generally having a right old time. But that's not the only notable thing from the video - we also got to hear what we think is Prince William's super fancy nickname for his daughter.

In the video, Prince William appears to say: "Mignonette", to which Princess Charlotte then turns around and says, "Yeah?" as if she was answering to a name. Although we can't be 100% sure that's definitely what William was saying, people on Twitter pointed out it sounds like he is calling his daughter 'mignonette', which could be derived from the French word 'mignon', meaning 'cute'.

If that is her nickname, it's both adorable and royally posh in equal parts.

At 9-years-old, Prince George has now been going to school for a few years. The royal heir now attends the Lambrook School with his siblings, but previously went to St Thomas' Battersea – and when he studied there, one of the mums at the school revealed a little more about the young royal to Vanity Fair.

Noting that George was "really happy" at school, where she said he was "popular and [had] lots of friends", the mum also let slip that his classmates have a nickname for him: P.G.

"His nickname is P.G," revealed the insider, who added: "There's very little fuss made about who he is."

Meghan and Harry's nickname for Archie before he was born

Before Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed baby Archie Harrison, he was talked about a lot. Because his gender wasn't known publicly, in the media the royal baby was referred to as 'Baby Sussex', in a nod to the fact its parents are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex - and it seems that nickname even caught on for Meghan and Harry themselves.

In an Instagram post, which many suspect was written by Meghan herself, the then-unborn royal was referred to as 'Baby Sussex'. When Meghan was pregnant with Lili, the couple's second child, the nickname was resumed by the media.

Basically everyone's nickname for Prince William

Prince William doesn't mind you calling him 'Will', btw

Prince William isn't just any royal, he's a cool, laidback royal who apparently likes to be called 'Will'. While on a visit to Blackpool with his wife Kate (or Catherine, if we're being formal about it), one woman explained how she accidentally called the Duke Will.

"I called Will 'Will'," Hello! reports she said. "I was like 'ahhhh sorry' and he said, 'Don't worry, that's my name'," the woman added. So there you go: that's his name and that's what he likes to be called.

Kate Middleton's nickname for Princess Charlotte

The royal family tend to give their children fairly traditional names, hence Prince William and Kate Middleton's selection of 'Charlotte' for their second-born child. But on a trip to Northern Ireland in 2019, Kate revealed she's got a more informal nickname for her daughter, which is common to a lot of Charlottes: Lottie.

Kate was chatting to blogger Laura-Ann in Belfast, where she had joined the crowds to greet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge along with her two-year-old son. When Laura-Ann mentioned she had another, older son, Bertie, who was four at the time, Kate Middleton commented that he's nearly the same age as "Lottie". It's the first time we've heard the mother-of-three refer to her daughter by this nickname, but we definitely think it suits the young Princess.

Prince George's nickname for Prince William

Prince George isn't a normal kid, which is why he doesn't call his dad by a normal name, like... Dad. In November 2018, while visiting Leicester, Kate Middleton spoke to a member of the crowd who later told reporters: "Kate said that William was playing football with the children last night and one of them said, I think it was George, 'Are you playing football tomorrow, Pops?'"

POPS. I love it. Let's hope this one sticks.

Prince George's nickname for Prince Charles

Prince George's grandfather, King Charles, is a pretty big deal - and it seems the young heir to the throne has a suitably respectful nickname for his rather regal grandad, with the Daily Mail previously revealing that the nine-year-old calls Prince Charles 'Grandpa Wales' after his former official title of Prince of Wales (that now belongs to Prince William). Sweet.

Prince William's nickname for Queen Elizabeth

Despite the fact Queen Elizabeth II was officially called 'Ma'am' or 'Your Majesty' to the majority of people, Prince William and Prince Harry were let off the hook when it came to the Queen, and were always encouraged to call her 'Granny'.

But it seems it took a young Prince William a while to get the hang of 'Granny', as according to Daily Mail royal correspondent Richard Kay, when the prince was just a child, he was overheard yelling ‘Gary, Gary’ after taking a tumble at Buckingham Palace.

"A guest who went to help asked who Gary was, assuming it must be a member of the royal household. ‘I’m Gary,’ explained the Queen, as she scooped him up. ‘He hasn’t learned to say Granny yet’," Kay wrote. So sweet.

Prince Harry's name for Meghan Markle

Before you panic that Prince Harry may not be quite the suave, smooth Prince you had him down as, don't worry - he's not given his wife a cringey nickname like 'schnookums' or anything. In fact, Harry's chosen pet name for Meghan is far simpler than that.

During an Invictus Games Reception in April 2018, Prince Harry was filmed saying: "Meg! Meg!" while trying to get his then-fiancé’s attention for an introduction. 'Meg'. We like it.
