If you've just finished binge-watching Netflix’s newest true crime docuseries, Should I Marry a Murderer?, you are probably still trying to process the jaw-dropping twists of the case.

The three-part series explores the harrowing story of Dr Caroline Muirhead, who discovered her fiancé, Alexander McKellar (known as Sandy), was hiding a dark and deadly secret. But who exactly is the man at the centre of this shocking cover-up, and what happened to him after his partner went to the police?

Here is everything you need to know about Alexander 'Sandy' McKellar, the tragic death of Tony Parsons, and where the convicted killer is today.

Who is Alexander 'Sandy' McKellar?

Alexander 'Sandy' McKellar was a deer stalker living and working on the 9,000-acre Auch Estate in Argyll, Scotland. To those around him, he seemed like an ordinary outdoorsman. In September 2020, he matched with pathologist Dr Caroline Muirhead on Tinder. The pair enjoyed a whirlwind romance and quickly became engaged. However, just months into their relationship, McKellar confessed – when asked by Muirhead if there was anything in his past that could impact on their future – that three years prior, he had been involved in a fatal hit-and-run. Chillingly, McKellar also confessed that he had buried the victim's body.

What happened to Tony Parsons?

In September 2017, 63-year-old Tony Parsons, a retired Royal Navy officer, beloved grandfather, and cancer survivor, was undertaking a charity bike ride to raise money for prostate cancer awareness, having told loved ones he wanted to "give something back" after overcoming the disease himself.

Tragically, while cycling along the A82 in the Scottish Highlands, Parsons was struck by a vehicle driven by Sandy McKellar, who had been drinking at a local hotel alongside his twin brother, Robert.

Instead of calling emergency services, the brothers made the callous decision to cover up the crime. They returned to the scene in a different vehicle, collected Parsons' body and his bicycle, and buried him in a remote peat bog on the estate where they worked.

For three agonising years, Parsons was treated as a missing person, with his family frantically appealing for information.

How was Alexander McKellar caught?

McKellar’s undoing came from his own confession to his fiancée. After telling Dr Muirhead what he had done, she bravely decided to stay in the relationship and attempt to gather evidence, that she could share with police.

By going undercover, she managed to get McKellar to take her to the exact location of the makeshift grave. While there, she dropped a Red Bull can into the ground to mark the spot.

Muirhead's efforts led to the McKellar twins being arrested in December 2020.

What was his sentence and what did his lawyer say?

In 2023, the case went to the High Court in Glasgow. McKellar ultimately pled guilty to the reduced charge of culpable homicide, as well as attempting to pervert the course of justice.

During the sentencing, the court heard from the defence lawyers. Brian McConnachie KC, defending Alexander McKellar, stated: "Mr McKellar [...] deeply regrets the trauma he put the family through" and acknowledged that "in his own words, he accepted he behaved in an entirely selfish and cowardly manner."

Meanwhile, John Scullion KC, the lawyer representing his brother, Robert McKellar, told the court that Robert had become involved in the cover-up out of "misplaced loyalty" to his twin.

In August 2023, Alexander McKellar was handed a 12-year prison sentence, while Robert McKellar was sentenced to five years behind bars.

Where is Alexander McKellar now?

Alexander 'Sandy' McKellar is currently serving his 12-year sentence in a Scottish prison. Because he pled guilty to culpable homicide rather than murder, he avoided a life sentence, but he will remain behind bars for the foreseeable future.
