Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie the Duchess of Edinburgh, have touched the hearts of royal fans by recreating a photo of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip during a trip to Malta.
The former monarch and her husband spent some time living in Malta during the early days of their marriage, and the country is known to be a very special place to the pair.
In the new photo, which was shared by the Royal Family's official Instagram account, Sophie and Edward pose on the rooftop Villa Guardamangia, where the Queen and Philip were based between 1949 and 1951.
The original black and white image of the late Queen and Prince was also shared for comparison.
A caption accompanying the post reads: "🇲🇹 Today, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh visited Villa Guardamangia: home to Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Elizabeth) and Prince Philip between 1949 and 1951 whilst the Prince was stationed in Malta as a Naval officer (swipe left for photo of the couple in 1949)."
It added that "the villa is currently being restored, and The Duke and Duchess were given a tour by staff involved in the heritage project."
Prince Edward was formerly known as the Duke of Wessex (and Sophie as the Duchess of Wessex) but inherited the title of the Duke of Edinburgh on 10 March 2023, his 59th birthday, at the request of his brother, King Charles III.
