Friends of Love Island's Davide Sanclimenti – who are running his social media accounts whilst he is in the villa – have apologised over a "heat of the moment" post made about Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu during last night's episode.
To recap, on Thursday 16 June we watched as Ekin-Su got to know bombshell Jay Younger after telling her fellow Islanders that Davide, who she's been coupled up with since last week, was no longer putting the kind of effort into the relationship that she expects. During the episode, Ekin-Su and Jay met on the terrace in secret, later sharing two kisses. At the end of the episode, Ekin-Su and Davide got into an argument over the breakdown of their romance, with him branding her a "liar" in a preview for Friday's instalment.
"Over the past few days we all had to tolerate a desperate attempt to steal the show," Davide's friends wrote in a post on Instagram whilst the episode was airing. "Like Davide said 'something is not quite right' and we really hope he figures out what’s really going on and takes action."
The post continued: "'I’d rather be in bed with you'... If you want to be treated like a lady, act like one first."
But, the message did not go down well with Love Island viewers who took to the comments section to call out what was being said, with one person highlighting how Ekin-Su was being 'slut shamed'.
"It's legit a game show to find out who your most compatible with. The slut shaming ain’t it at all," one person commented on the post, with another person writing: "Hopefully Davide isn’t as misogynistic as the people running his account..."
Everyone's clicking on...
Elsewhere, dating educator and author Lalalaletmeexplain wrote on her Story: "Davide's team need some help, because this is giving very bad vibes."
In light of the backlash, Davide's team took to the social platform to share an apology for their comments. "Following yesterday’s post, we would like to clarify that as Davide’s friends, it can be frustrating to see someone play with his emotions and in the heat of the moment felt the need to voice it," his team wrote.
"Davide has pure intentions always and we felt this was not reciprocated. However, we would like to point out, that we understand our views and opinions may not necessarily reflect his," they added. "We have decided to keep the original post up as this is a place of conversation and people are entitled to their opinions, whether we agree or not."
Although the apology was welcomed by some followers, not everyone was convinced. "Alarming how misogynistic whoever wrote the caption is, the fact you need to degrade a confident woman who’s going after what she wants is WILD - guarantee if the shoe was on the other foot, you’d be rooting for Davide," a Love Island viewer said in response.
