We're only two episodes into the 2022 season of Love Island, but the show is already causing a stir on social media – and it's not to do with bombshell Davide stealing one of the girls to couple-up with. In fact, viewers took to social media to call out the lack of subtitling available when watching the show live on ITV Hub, pointing out a double standard, given that this year's series features the first ever deaf contestant, Tasha Ghouri.
"Imagine #LoveIsland having their first deaf contestant but still not having subtitles accessible when watching live on ITV Hub," one unhappy viewer said on Twitter, with another person saying: "The irony of having a deaf cast member but no subtitles on this show."
"Imagine having a deaf contestant on Love Island but still making it so inaccessible with how loud the music is and no subtitles," another viewer tweeted, with a fourth fan of the show simply adding: "So Love Island has its first deaf contestant but no subtitles on-demand."
In light of the backlash on social media, ITV responded to a tweet by telling viewers, "We're sorry for the disappointment. We're working on subtitle offering including on the live streams so watch this space!"
When contacted by Cosmopolitan UK, ITV confirmed that subtitles are available for those watching Love Island on ITV2 and when catching up on-demand via ITV Hub – although, subtitles aren't available for live-streaming on ITV Hub. When asked about the subtitling on their live services via ITV Hub, ITV did not directly respond to Cosmopolitan UK's request.
To recap, earlier this week Love Island kicked off with a whole host of new contestants looking for love in the villa this summer. The lineup included a fishmonger and a celebrity offspring, and also model and dancer Tasha, who is Love Island's first ever deaf contestant. Opening up to her new housemates in episode one, Tasha revealed she's been deaf since birth and uses a cochlear implant to help her hear.
The heartwarming moment was well received by Love Island fans, with plenty taking to social media to praise the Islander for being so brave. "This must have taken a lot of guts. Really liking her so far," one viewer said of the moment Tasha told the other Islanders that she is deaf. "Tasha the first deaf contestant on Love Island. We wanted diversity and we've got it," a second Love Island fan said on Twitter.
