Of all the summer dress trends we're embracing this season, few are as reliable as the smocked dress.
When temperatures rise, our sartorial requirements centre on pieces that are light and breezy to wear for an effortless outfit. But if you want a little more structure without sacrificing comfort, the smocked dress strikes the perfect balance. Offering a more defined silhouette while remaining breathable and easy to move in, it's the ideal answer to warm-weather dressing.
For the uninitiated, smocking refers to fabric that has been tightly gathered and pleated, often secured with decorative embroidery. Most commonly found on dresses and tops, the technique creates texture and visual interest while allowing the fabric to stretch comfortably with the body. The result is a flattering fit that feels as good as it looks.
For the spring/summer 2026 season, designers continued to champion the detail on the runway. At Chloé, smocking covered entire bodices. It accentuated elegant drop waists at Ulla Johnson, while Victoria Beckham incorporated the technique more subtly, framing asymmetric necklines and leg-baring slits. Whether bold or understated, smocking lends itself to countless silhouettes, making it a trend that genuinely works across a variety of styles, shapes and sizes.
It's also a trend that's been steadily gaining momentum beyond the catwalk. Brands including Hill House Home, Dôen, Damson Madder, and Smock London have all helped bring smocking back into the spotlight. Founded by two friends in 2019, Smock London has built its entire offering around the heritage craft, creating hand-smocked pieces in collaboration with artisan communities in Madagascar and Vietnam. The result feels both timeless and distinctly modern.
Naturally, as trends always do, the look has since made its way onto the high street. For those who don't want to break the bank on yet another summer dress, there are plenty of affordable options available. H&M's Smocked Seersucker Dress is a standout, coming in three soft pastel shades that feel perfectly suited to the season.
