There’s something to be said about volume in fashion, and balloon leg trousers are pivotal in that discussion as of this spring and summer. Now, I know when first seeing them in the wild, it’s easy to think they’re an intimidating style choice. One only to be worn by an eclectic art teacher, for example. But I’m here to tell you that balloon leg trousers are a staple wardrobe necessity that you should invest in, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen this style take over Western fashion, but its origins date back almost 2,000 years, beginning in many Middle Eastern, African, and Asian cultures. Balloon leg trousers, similar to harem pants and also colloquially known as parachute or genie pants, were originally worn for practicality by horse and camel riders. They feature a loose, billowy fit with a tapered or tied ankle.

In the early 20th century, French designer Paul Poiret introduced the style to Western fashion, where they've proceeded to come in and out of style over the decades since. The past few seasons have seen luxury brands like Michael Kors, Altuzarra, and ALAÏA show balloon leg trousers in their runway collections, an obvious testament to their It factor.

Okay, now that you're all caught up on the history, this summer is proving the balloon leg trouser trend is at its peak, with all the coolest fashion girlies wearing them and every high street fashion brand selling them. Stylish, functional, and ideal for summer temperatures thanks to their breathable material, you’ll never have to give up fashion for function with these. And I think those are the best kind of clothing pieces to invest in.

If you don’t mind a few double takes, pairing balloon leg trousers with a bold, fitted top can be a nice start. This furry one adds an extra layer of flair that draws you in and keeps the interest. For something less statement but equally chic, try a satin camisole to balance out the proportions on your bottom half.

Want to let your bottoms do all the talking? Tossing on a simple neutral-coloured top is a prime option, too. It makes the look more relaxed and less showy but still feels incredibly fashion-forward and interesting.

Pairing balloon leg trousers with a button-down shirt falls in line with the neutral shirt approach. It is for the more subtle fashion person who wants to look put together but not too flashy. The tailored finish works to contrast the casual bottoms – even oversized shirts, just remember to French tuck!

Sometimes, more is more! Opt for an equally voluminous top in the same colourway as your balloon leg trousers to create a chic and stylish co-ord. Pointed toe shoes and those with a heel (even a kitten height) will help create a lengthening effect to offset all the fabric.
