15 female characters who changed our TV screens
Mark International Women's Day with some strong on-screen women and girls

On International Women's Day, we think of the game-changing women who have tirelessly fought for gender equality as well as paying homage to the women in our own lives who inspire and empower us every day.
But there's also something to be said for fictional characters. As television is so ingrained in our society, it's where a lot of people's ideas and impressions are informed. For example, Lisa Simpson - along with the Spice Girls - is one of the first memories I have of a female vocalising gender equality.
Over the years, strong, ambitious and non-stereotypical female characters have only multiplied thanks to the domination of female writers and producers like Shonda Rhimes and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
There's still work to be done, and always will be until we have true representation. But at least a start has been made with the relatable, exciting and commanding characters featured below.
