The Night Manager season two came to a dramatic close last night (Sunday, 1st February) with an epic finale that had fans on the edge of their seats. But not everything made it to the screen, with part of a key scene cut.
In the finale, Roxana confronted Roper, insisting she wasn’t in love with Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston). "I didn’t lose my heart to him, and if someone did, it wasn’t me," she said. It's this moment that made it clear to Roper that his son Teddy was no longer loyal to him - and had instead been won over by what Jonathan represented.
Speaking about the finale, the show’s creator and writer David Farr revealed that the scene originally went much further—but he chose to cut parts of it, fearing it would “give too much away to the audience too quickly.”
"That is what literally cracks open everything," Farr explained. "There’s a fun thing about that scene, which we can talk about now, because when we originally filmed it, it went farther."
He added to Variety: "Roper acts out this realisation about [Teddy’s allegiance].
That’s the moment when everything falls into place and he realises he’s being played. Roxana’s key role in the season, weirdly, is that moment. Because it’s her cleareyedness that makes Roper understand, and thus he makes the changes to the weapons drop. In the end, we chose not to put that part of the scene in because it felt like it could give too much away to the audience too quickly."
While viewers didn’t see the original full-length scene, Farr explained that this moment between Roxana and Roper remains just as crucial to the story.
"He [Roper] needs that moment of absolute understanding, and I like that she gives it to him," Farr added.
The Night Manager seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
