Hostage is Netflix's latest thriller, starring Suranne Jones as the British Prime Minister, Abigail Dalton.
The five-part series centres on Dalton, whose world is turned upside down when her husband, Dr. Alex Anderson (Ashley Thomas), a humanitarian doctor working overseas, is abducted. As pressure mounts, Dalton is given an impossible ultimatum: step down from office - or risk her husband’s life.
The show takes place mostly at the Prime Minister's residence, 10 Downing Street, but there are also scenes set in French Guiana and the French Embassy in the UK.
But, where was the show actually filmed?
Here's everything you need to know.
Where was Netflix's Hostage filmed?
Since filming at the actual 10 Downing Street wasn’t possible, the crew built a complete replica of the iconic setting from scratch on an abandoned airfield.
The production team requested permission to take measurements of 10 Downing Street for their set but were denied. Instead, they relied on Google Maps to estimate the building’s scale and proportions.
Set designers Arwel Jones and Laura Mayall explained how they used Google Maps to get a "relative position" of where everything was and ended up counting bricks to get the scale correct.
"We knew we couldn’t shoot at the real place. Although we did ask whether we could go and measure up at Downing Street. But we were denied for some reason. While ideally you would survey the real thing, Laura worked out the scale of it from using Google Maps," Arwel explained.
"While we watched a lot of footage and looked at a lot of images online, the main resource for us in recreating it was Google Maps. That was able to give us the relative position of everything. Then we had to work out how much we needed to build… In the end, the set was about 55 metres in length. We replicated both sides of the street, and ended up building it to the height of the ceilings of the first floor," Mayall added to TVGuide.co.uk
Much of the interior shots of 10 Downing Street took place at the stately home of Langleybury House in Kings Langley.
Similarly, the team hoped to film in the actual House of Commons, but plans fell apart following a recent change in government. As a result, the designers had to create a full-scale House of Commons set specifically for the PMQs scenes.
Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, Spain, acted as double for French Guiana in the series, where a local Spanish crew built the rundown structure that served as the hostage location.
"On Las Palmas there were logistical issues that were really time consuming. For example, the car chase we shot there - which was one of my favourite things to do, because I love directing action - was tough because there's only small roads on the island, and just getting access to them with our multiple vehicles lead to a lot of time delays - which is time we never got back," director Isabelle Sieb said of shooting on the island.
"So I often had to think on my feet and make sure that we get everything we needed, even though it sometimes meant that I had to let go of a few dream shots. Hopefully though, the viewer will watch the sequence and never know that it was challenging."
Hostage is available to stream on Netflix.
