We love a good tear-jerker of a movie. There's just something about getting cosy on a Sunday afternoon and sobbing your heart out over fictional characters. Seriously a big ugly cry, where you splutter and sigh as a character dies/falls in love/discovers an affair is beyond cathartic. But what is the most emotional movie scene of all time?
Well, Samsung polled 2,000 UK adults, to mark the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7, about their TV and movie watching habits, and found that 71 per cent have cried over at a film or TV show while watching it on their phones.
But of all the films in the world, which movies had the most emotive scenes? Here's the top 10 most tear-jerking scenes perfect for a weekend sob fest.
The top 10 most emotional movie scenes
10. Up (2009) - Carl and Ellie's life montage
We challenge anyone not to cry at this moment in the Pixar movie. It's a wordless scene where we see the couple's life together through a series of moments that deeply showcases their love for one another and honestly, it's just a tearjerker.
9. Love Actually (2003) - Emma Thompson's Joni Mitchell scene
We love Alan Rickman, but we did not love his character Harry in Love Actually after it was revealed he had cheated on Emma Thompson's character Karen, and she found out in the most heartbreaking way. Imagine unboxing what you think is a gorgeous piece of jewellery only to discover it's actually a CD, and your husband has given the necklace to his secretary. Cue: Joni Mitchell playing sadly in the corner.
8. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) - The "I'll be right here" moment
Gets us every time. They don't make friendships like that anymore.
7. Marley & Me (2008) – Saying goodbye to Marley
In our opinion this should be much higher up the list. All the family having to say goodbye to Marley when he's slowly dying? Actually crushing.
6. Toy Story 3 (2010) – Andy gives away his toys
It really was the end of an era when we had to witness Andy give away Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang. Just as he was ending his childhood, so were we and we're still not really over it.
5. Schindler’s List (1993) – The “I could have done more” moment
This is a really poignant scene when Liam Neeson's character Schindler breaks down over the guilt and pain he feels over not being able to save more of those from the Holocaust.
4. Forrest Gump (1994) – Forrest at Jenny’s Grave
Jenny and Forrest's relationship was both joyful and crushing to watch for the majority of the movie and so it really hits home when the scene comes to Forrest at Jenny's grave. He gives an update on their son's life and also reveals he bulldozed Jenny's father's home, but our tears really start to go when Forrest breaks into tears too.
3. The Green Mile (1999) – John Coffey’s execution
Another Tom Hanks movie in the top five, but this time it's the heartbreaking scene of John Coffey's execution played brilliantly by Michael Clarke Duncan.
2. The Lion King (1994) – Mufasa’s Death
How was this moment allowed in a kids movie? It honestly broke us then, and still breaks us now as Simba realises his beloved father has been crushed by the wildebeest.
1.Titanic (1997) – “I’ll never let go, Jack”
Except, she did. And we're not sure we ever recovered. The most emotional moment of all cinematic history according to the Samsung poll is of course when Rose and Jack are in the ocean and she's on that floating door and she promises to hold onto Jack's hand, only to see him slip away moments later. Cues: floods of tears.
