How are you planning to spend your weekend? Well, we for one, will be sat in the cinema with pink and green nails, watching the release of Wicked Part 1, trying our best not to sing out loud, while also majorly fangirling over Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's performances as Elphaba and Glinda. But just how long will be sat in our seats in the cinema? We've got all the details on the movie's runtime.
And get ready to bring all the snacks, as Wicked Part 1 has a pretty long runtime. The movie, which lands in cinemas on 22nd November, is based on the stage production of the same name and tells the origin story of two of the most famous figures from The Wizard of Oz; The Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.
In the movie we see the pair first interacting at school and the building of their friendship over time, and the events that cause Elphaba to become "wicked".
Just as excited as us? Here's what you need to know about how long the movie is.
How long is the Wicked movie?
Wicked Part 1 has an impressive runtime of 2 hours and 40 minutes. This isn't including adverts before the movie, so you can expect to be in the cinema for around 3 hours depending on when you arrive.
This movie is 10 minutes longer than the stage production of Wicked. In the theatre the first act is 1 hour and 30 minutes, before a 15 minute interval, and then an hour for the second act.
The movie's director Jon M. Chu has touched on the movie's length, telling The Hollywood Reporter they debated how long to make the movie and whether they should split it in two, before ultimately deciding they needed to make two movies in order to tell the story effectively.
"We all agreed that we were splitting it. And we found that that room was necessary. Because if you’re going to, I don’t know, perhaps end on a 'Defying Gravity,' let’s say, then you have Elphaba that needs to be the most pivotal moment of her life," he explained. "So then you need to set up Elphaba more than maybe the show does. You need to see what her childhood was like."
He added: "And how do you build that friendship? In the medium of movie, you call bulls**t on things so fast, you have to have the time and the space to believe in that relationship. And you have a narrator of Galinda that wraps it all together, that sets up things for movie two. So all those things are just a lot, and I think we found a beautiful balance in it. I think when you see the movie, it’ll all make more sense."
Ok, we're now even more excited to watch Wicked this weekend.
