The drama of Euphoria season 2 episode 7 ‘The Theatre and Its Double’ was finally unleashed on the UK last night, and a LOT happened.
As it's the penultimate episode of the series, we were expecting big things, and the ambitious plot certainly delivered. It was curtains up on Lexi’s (Maude Apatow) long-awaited play and she took the role of director, writer and star in a show that is a scandalous retelling of the lives of her nearest and dearest, who are all unsuspecting viewers in the audience.
"Wait is this play f**king about us?" Maddy (Alexia Demie) asks, at the exact moment when we know it’s about to get messy.
Lexi’s masterpiece reveals the details of personal events concerning the group, starting with Rue’s (Zendaya) descent into drugs at her father’s funeral, her sister Cassie’s (Sydney Sweeney) experiences of puberty, Cassie and Maddy’s friendship, Maddy and Nate’s (Jacob Elordi) relationship and more.
The play eventually signalled an end to Cassie and Nate's relationship, after Maddy discovered her best friend was sleeping with her ex-boyfriend, just three weeks and three days after their split.
In the most recent episode, close ups of Cassie show visible feelings of guilt, regret and sadness as she rushes to the bathroom to take shelter, compose herself and slap on a fake smile.
When she returns to the play, Nate is furious about a “homophobic” scene that mocks his sexuality and the pair have a row in the hallway.
Nate then says he is “f***ing done” with their relationship and breaks things off with Cassie, telling her to take her things and move out of his house. One look at social media suggested fans were #TeamMaddy about the whole thing, with one writing "Not Nate dumping Cassie 2 and a half minutes into their relationship #EUPHORIA #EuphoriaDay”
Another joked: “Me sleeping good tonight knowing lexi’s play destroyed Nate and Cassie relationship #Euphoria”
The episode ends with Cassie crying and heading back into the auditorium. What a cliffhanger. We’ll have to wait until next week to see what the season finale has in store… get your popcorn ready, it’s probably going to be a big one!
