The new season of Married At First Sight UK returns to our screens this eve and we are sooo excited!

ICYMI: the series sees expertly matched couples meet for the first time on their wedding day. (Yes, it's all in the name). One question we have, season after season, is whether these weddings are actually legally binding?

Keep reading for what we know!

Are the Married At First Sight UK weddings legally binding?

In short, the marriages on Married At First Sight UK are not legally binding.

Channel 4 have said: "Following the Australian format, rather than legal marriages, the couples will make a lifelong commitment to one another at a glamorous ceremony, overseen by a wedding celebrant, that includes guests, bridal gowns, dancing, speeches and cake."

Season six bride Nikita Jasmine also confirmed this in an Instagram live when she was asked if the couples are legally married.

"No it's not a legally binding contract," Nikita said. "It's classed as a social experiment."

So, at the end of the experiment, couples are given the option to either go their separate ways or continue their romance during their final commitment ceremony.

If the couples on Married at First Sight UK do decide to split up, they do not need to get divorced as their marriages were never legally binding in the first place.

Good to know!
