Despite winning Love Island together in 2017, Amber Davies has revealed that soon after the show she discovered that she and Kem Cetinay were being paid different amounts for the same work.
In a brief clip of her appearance in an upcoming documentary about the gender pay gap, called Still Working 9 to 5, Amber spoke about discovering that she and Kem were receiving different pay for the same jobs after winning Love Island together.
"I have experienced the pay gap," Amber said. "When I won Love Island, the guy I won it with and I would do jobs together and he would get paid quite a bit more than me for the same jobs.
Amber continued, "So then I stuck up for myself and I was like 'you know, actually, I’m not going to do the job, you can do it by yourself.' So yeah, I stick up for myself."
The documentary looks back on Jane Fonda's famous film 9 to 5 from 1980 (now a huge West End musical) and looks at how workplace inequality has changed in the last 40 years. It features interviews with huge celebrities like Dolly Parton, and the film's original cast, along with Amber who played Violet Newstead in the original West End production of the film.
Speaking about her role in the pay Amber said, "Violet says a line in the show, where she says 'I bet in 10 years time this won’t be an issue,' and that’s the whole point, it still is an issue.
"The pay gap, still daycare and things like that for people’s children. Though we have made a difference and it is changing for the better, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done."
