I tried 22 of the best shampoos for dry hair in 2025 (so you don't have to)

Dry strands? These will help...

best shampoo for dry hair

If your hair feels as brittle as a piece of straw, it may be time to invest in a shampoo for dry hair. From bleaching to excessive heat styling, there are so many reasons why your hair feels dry. But fortunately, the shampoo aisle is just as busy and exciting as an American cereal aisle, with many formulas to choose from.

Now, many shampoos claim to pump moisture back into parched strands. But ~ spoiler ~ some bottles are simply laden with alcohol and silicones that may feel nice, but can actually be even more drying and damaging in the long run. So, with that in mind, here’s a peak at the best shampoos that will combat dryness and leave your lengths feeling soft and healthy.

What is the best shampoo for dry hair?

When searching for a hydrating shampoo, there are a few things you should consider. “You want something that is hydrating but without weighing your hair down,” says DJ Quintero, Celebrity Stylist for Living Proof. The best ones will contain ingredients like shea butter and jojoba oil to nourish and soften the hair, while hyaluronic acid will provide deep hydration to the hair shaft.

It also helps if it is sulphate-free. Sulphates are a normal cleansing agent in soaps, shampoos and body washes. Their job is to remove a build-up of grease and dirt, but if used in too high a quantity, the process can be a little harsh and get rid of all the natural oils, causing more dryness.

How we test shampoo for dry hair

shampoo for dry hair
Hearst Owned

As a fellow dry hair sufferer myself, I understand the struggle that comes with wasting your money on crappy shampoo – it just sits in the corner of your shower gathering limescale. I’ve bleached my hair twice and regularly use my straighteners, so I am well-versed on the best hair masks and hydrating shampoos that have nourished my lengths back to their former glory.

I decided to try out some of the UK’s most popular shampoos for dry hair, each designed to nourish strands. Some of these bottles I tried specifically for this piece, others have come highly recommended by friends and some I have been using for years in my journey to healthy locks.

The L’Oreal Paris Elvive Glycolic Gloss shampoo is not only packed with glycolic acid to do just that, but it’s also sulphate-free so it cleanses without leaving your hair feeling dry or stripped.

  • It smells of coconut and fig

Cons

  • The texture may feel too rich on fine hair types

Hydrating by name, hydrating by nature, the Coco & Eve Super Hydrating Shampoo is one of the best money can buy if you have straw-like strands. It’s formulated with the brand’s ResistHyal™ Technology – a blend of hyaluronic acid to boost the hair’s moisture levels.

Alongside this, there is coconut (a rich, fatty acid) to help heal split ends, while nourishing oils like argan, avocado and camellia seal cuticles and leave a healthy shine. As you massage it into your scalp, it foams up into a rich lather and you can really feel the hydrating benefits getting to work.

Even after one use you’ll notice such a great difference in your hair’s overall softness, manageability and shine. But stick to it, and you’ll be buying your second bottle in no time.

The lather is rich, the scent is lush, and the post-wash softness? Unreal. Just a heads up – if your hair’s on the finer side, it might feel a bit too rich. But for thirsty textures? It’s basically a tall glass of water.
