This season, we're seeing fashion's obsession with dresses take many forms. Whether it be a return to the roaring ‘2os through drop-waists or a refreshed take on the linen shift silhouette, we're leaning into experimenting with styles with a bit more *oomph*.
While the list of trends to try might be a long one, it may be time to bump hanky hem dresses to the top. Named for its resemblance to a handkerchief held at its centre point, the skirts on these designs feature an asymmetric, uneven hemline that often dips at multiple points.
It should come as no surprise that the handkerchief hem dress is back. You’ll have seen handkerchiefs, bandanas, and scarves in general everywhere as of late – worn as belts, tops, skirts, and of course, neck scarves galore – and this is merely a natural progression of the look.
Popularised in the ‘70s, the hanky hem is seeing a considered ‘re-do’. From paired-back, chiffon neutrals to piled-on prints, there is an endless selection to choose from. The key to styling one is to let it do all of the visual talking. Meaning, keep accessories simple and remember, less is more. Try leaning into layered, dainty jewellery and add polish to your look with a subtle kitten heel. Or, if you're heading to a festival this summer, opt for a buckled, Miu Miu-style biker boot for some extra edge.
Looking for the perfect piece to kick off your collection? The high street is a one-stop shop, and Mango’s lace ruffle dress is a team favourite. It’s light, neutral and the perfect length (read: an easy soft-launch into the world of alternate hems). Treat this hanky dress as a blank canvas or layer on accessories to take it to the next level. Stack on mixed metals, like statement chunky cuffs, for an ode to Chloé-esque bohemia or mainstay beaded necklaces and woven caps for an indie lean.
