When it comes to trending hairstyles, bobs are not going anywhere anytime soon. Whatever length (from bixie to lob) or the way it's styled, (full-on nineties blowdries to wavier shapes) the haircut remains a big pick for hair in 2025. Lucky for us then, as half of team Cosmo Beauty UK are card-carrying members of the bob club - and we are talking bobs on fine hair and super thick hair types.
But, let's be real, while there is bob for everyone, not every bob suits every hair texture or thickness. There are some styles that are made for thick hair and some bobs that are ideal for fine hair. If you're in the latter category and have hair on the thinner side of things but are thinking of cutting a bob, here's your guide to the the best bob shapes for you (and the products to maintain it)...
What is the best bob cut for fine hair?
First of all, whatever style you want you should have, at Cosmo we don't like prescribing to the idea that you have to have a certain look because you have a specific hair type. A lot of the time, your stylist will just work with your hair to create the illusion of whatever you desire, if it's possible. "When cutting a bob, it’s all about the distribution of weight within the haircut," Annie Croucher of Annie Westworks Hair, East Sussex, notes. So, when it comes to finer hair, she says, "you use the hair to its advantage to help create the appearance of thicker locks." So, if you want an uber-layered bob a la Jenna Ortega, you go for it!
Howevs, there is one cut that is, ahem, a cut above the rest for fine hair, and that is the blunt, aka one-length bob. "A classic one-length bob is an excellent choice for fine hair," says Croucher, "as it concentrates all the weight at the bottom, creating a blunt line. This draws the eye to the ends of the hair, making it appear overall thicker."
Christopher Laird, founder of Laird & Co, Edinburgh, also give a shout out to the soft lob as a good bob style for fine hair, saying that it "introduces movement without compromising volume."
What else should should we think about when styling bobs on fine hair?
While the scissors are already out, why not contemplate a lil fringe? Yep, it can feel counterintuitive to snip away more hair, but Croucher really recommends it if you struggle with volume already at the front of your hair. "In some cases, fine hair can look sparse around the hairline. Bouncy bangs can be a great way to add volume at the front without removing weight through layering." Bob haircuts for fine hair: inspiration
Chin-grazing one-length bob
When we asked our fave stylists what the very best bob for fine hair is, this is always their number one pick.
A French bob cut
Short and sharp, this is perfect for fine hair as the blunt ends build fullness. Pair it with a fringe (like below) for extra cool points.
A feathered French bob
This style is a little longer and texture is added with the feathering technique to create soft layers.
A soft bob with long layers
Graduation creates the bounciness in this style, the major key for faking fullness on fine hair.
A curved bob with a fringe
This eyelash skimming full fringe really creates volume with this style.
A bell-cut bob
This bob is one length through the side and back but with gentle layering at the front. Use a wand or hot brush to create the flicked ends.
A bouncy lob
A longer bob will give you length to play with to create volume (yep, it's time to dig out those hot rollers). Keeping layering and graduation to a minimum for max styling options.
