WWhen it comes to accurately representing members of the LGBTQ+ community in media, the film industry as a whole still has a looooong way to go. And if the attacks on LGBTQ+ rights are any indication, representation matters now more than ever (and not just during Pride Month in June). Thankfully, as Hollywood has grown more diverse, so, too, has the number of LGBTQ+ movies that do a really great job of celebrating the life and culture of the community. Queer films, especially those made by queer storytellers, share important stories that need to be told from the LGBTQ+ perspective—whether they're about coming out, coming of age, or coming to terms with your first heartbreak—and you definitely don't have to be celebrating Pride or identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community yourself to enjoy them.
We've rounded up some of our favorite queer films of all time (listed in no particular order), including movies that offer insight into the gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, and queer experiences. To be clear, there is no such thing as one movie that encapsulates the entire LGBTQ+ experience, but these are a pretty great place to start, and the best part is that you can stream them all right this very second. Love Lies Bleeding (2024)
Lou is a gym manager who meets a bodybuilder named Jackie, who has come to Las Vegas to pursue her career. The two become romantically involved and deal with the highs and lows of Lou’s family. The twists and turns in this film will have you on the edge of your seat!
Blue Moon (2025)
Nominated for two Academy Awards during this year’s Oscars ceremony, Blue Moon tells the untold story of lyricist Lorenz Hart (Ethan Hawke) who partnered with composer Richard Rogers. Hart departed from his professional career prior to Rogers working with Oscar Hammerstein II, in which that duo famously made songs seen in Oklahoma!, Cinderella, and The Sound of Music. Prior to parting ways professionally with Rogers, Hart dealt with some difficult roadblocks during the end of his life in the 1940s, including sobriety and trying to discover his sexuality.

Red, White & Royal Blue (2023)
Based on the novel by Casey McQuiston, Red, White & Royal Blue follows Alex Clairmont-Diaz, the first son of the United States, and his contentious relationship with England’s heir to the throne, Prince Henry. The two develop an unlikely romance after bonding at a party and this film follows their story in navigating their love for one another while also adhering to the duties of their respective countries.
All of Us Strangers (2023)
This romance fantasy film follows screenwriter Adam as he and his mysterious neighbor Harry develop a relationship. As this happens, he becomes drawn back to his childhood home. And it looks, sounds, and feels like his parents are still living there, exactly as they were 30 years ago...before they died.
Happy Together (1997)
Lai (Tony Leung) and his boyfriend Ho (Leslie Cheung) want to start a new, better life in Argentina. But their plans fall apart, and they both end up lonely and far from the place that they call home.
But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)
A '90s classic, But I'm a Cheerleader tells the story of a teenage girl who is sent to conversion therapy by her parents. What follows is a wild story of self-discovery, rebellion, and, yes, camp.
Farewell My Concubine (1993)
Cheng Dieyi (Leslie Cheung) and Duan Xiaolou (Fengyi Zhang) train at the Beijing Opera House at the same time. Cheng usually plays the female lead to Duan's male lead character. But while this is all pretend, Cheng soon begins to develop real feelings for Duan. This ends up becoming an unrequited love, and the film follows the pair's complicated friendship over the next 50 years.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Set in France in 1770, a painter named Marianne is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of a young, reluctant bride Héloïse. Because Héloïse refuses to pose for a painting, Marianne must observe her carefully everyday and quietly do so in secret.
Spoiler Alert (2022)
Based on the memoir by Michael Ausiello, Spoiler Alert is an epic, and ultimately tragic, love story about Michael (played by Jim Parsons) and Kit (Ben Aldridge). You will absolutely need tissues for this one, but, don't worry, it's no trauma porn.
Saving Face (2004)
This groundbreaking film from Asian American director Alice Wu tells the story of a young Chinese-American woman, Wil (Michelle Krusiec), who takes in her traditional Chinese mother (Joan Chen), forcing her to reconcile her mother's expectations with her sexual orientation and relationship with Vivian (Lynn Chen).
Monica (2023)
Trace Lysette stars as Monica, a trans woman who returns home to take care of her dying mother, despite the fact that her mother disowned her when she came out as transgender. The film is an intimate portrait of family and the struggle for acceptance, all while telling a trans story starring actual transgender performers.
Crush (2022)
Paige (Rowan Blanchard) finds herself in a bit of a pickle after she starts having feelings for AJ (Auli'i Cravalho)...even though she's had a massive crush on AJ's sister Gabriela (Isabella Ferreira) forever. And I thought my high school experience was complicated.
The Inspection (2022)
Elegance Bratton wrote and directed The Inspection, a semi-autobiographical film about his own experience joining the Marines after being kicked out by his mother for being gay.
Good Grief (2023)
An artist (Dan Levy) mourns the loss of his writer husband. He decides to take his two best friends on a trip to Paris as a thank you for helping him through his grief. There, they begin to face hard truths they were not able to before.
Bros (2022)
Billy Eichner co-wrote and starred in Bros, the first gay rom-com featuring an all LGBTQ cast produced by a major studio and released in theaters. It's a groundbreaking film, and, yes, it's hilarious.
Shiva Baby (2021)
Things get messy for Danielle (Rachel Sennott) in Shiva Baby when she's forced to attend a shiva with her parents, of whom her ex, Maya (Molly Gordon), and current sugar daddy, Max (Danny Deferrari), are also attending.
My Own Private Idaho (1991)
Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix star in this drama about two young male sex workers, Mike (Phoenix) and Scott (Reeves), who become best friends. The film isn't exactly an uplifting LGTQ+ story, but the deep relationship between Mike and Scott made My Own Private Idaho a cult classic.
