Mom, come pick me up! A creepy, buzzy A24 movie has everyone talking again. If you need to see Backrooms and find yourself in desperate need of directions, these are the details you need to know to watch Kane Parson’s movie in theaters ASAP or catch it on streaming later this year.
Backrooms is about a door that appears in a furniture showroom and leads to a seemingly endless series of, well, “back rooms” that are all beige and sterile an unsettling ways. Don’t look up anything else, though! Let’s leave it there, so as to avoid any potential spoilers. The promotional material has made it clear that this is the type of movie you want to know as little about as possible.
How can I watch Backrooms now?
The movie was released by A24 in theaters on May 29, 2026. While I totally understand people who prefer to stream scary movies at home, because I am low key one of them, many prefer to watch movies like Backrooms in a crowd. Up to you! Some people need solidarity and others need the ability to pause and NOPE tf out.
Where will Backrooms be streaming?
A24 made a streaming distribution deal with HBO Max.
When will Backrooms be streaming?
2026 releases that recently dropped on HBO Max at the time of Backrooms’ theatrical release include the February and March releases, respectively, “Wuthering Heights” and The Bride! Meanwhile, the A24 film How To Make A Killing, that opened in theaters on February 20, isn’t set to stream on HBO Max until June 19. The latter is probably the better gauge because it’s the same studio; so let’s guess that Backrooms will start streaming on or around September 25.
Of course, at some point between now and then you’ll be able to digitally rent the film on PVOD. That usually happens about a month after the theatrical premiere. Still, that’s potentially quite the wait!
What to watch until that happens:
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been getting major Severance vibes from the Backrooms trailer and Helvetica Neue font. Even if they’re actually nothing alike, you shouldn’t need an excuse to watch or re-watch the Apple TV+ series.
You can and should watch Kane Parsons’ Backrooms web series that inspired the movie while you wait. You could also do an internet deep dive on the creepypasta meme on a 4chan thread that inspired the web series that inspired the movie. Not to get too meta, but there’s layers to this.
Finally, if you’re interested in under-the-radar show and movie recommendations featuring the cast of Backrooms that have nothing to do with Backrooms: watch Chiwetel Ejiofor in Dancing on the Edge and The Life of Chuck, Renate Reinsvate in A Different Man, Mark Duplass in Room 104 and The Creep Tapes, Finn Bennett in Warfare, Lukita Maxwell in Generation, and Avan Jogia in Now Apocalypse.
