Let's say it right away: The third season of My Life with the Walter Boys is the one in which the series finally seems to understand what it wants to be. After a second season much more focused on the triangle between Jackie, Cole, and Alex, the new episodes let the protagonists mature, finally give space to relationships, and build a much richer universe around them. And above all, they allow Jackie and Cole to truly live what we had understood since the first season: the two of them choose each other.
Jackie and Cole can finally live their love
After two seasons spent longing for each other, losing each other, finding each other again, and constantly complicating their relationship, seeing Jackie and Cole finally together completely changes the dynamic of the series.
The most interesting thing is that they are no longer the two immature kids we met at the beginning: they know what they feel, they know they want each other, and above all, they have reached a much deeper awareness of their own feelings. Being together allows both of them to bring out the best version of themselves. Jackie, whom we have always seen as extremely focused, rational, and determined to build a perfect future for herself, finally allows herself to live in the present, to have fun, and to make room for her emotions. And Cole, perhaps even more than she does, shows how much he has changed since Jackie arrived in Silver Falls. The person we have known for years as the “bad boy” of the Walter family is increasingly revealed for who he really is: a loyal, sensitive, and deeply selfless boy who used that armor precisely to protect himself.
Of course, the series sometimes tries to make us doubt whether being together might distract them from their goals, but in reality that distraction is not necessarily something negative. For the first time, they are allowing themselves to have a life beyond expectations, school, the future, and family problems. And that is precisely what makes them more adult and, paradoxically, more balanced.
Alex finally finds his path and becomes one of the best characters
If there is one character who has experienced enormous growth, it is Alex.
In the second season, we saw him move far away from the version of himself we knew, letting himself be swept up in the world of rodeo and almost taking on the role of the family's new “bad boy.” In season 3, however, Alex keeps his passion, but completely changes his approach. When he realizes that within his team they are asking for compromises he is not willing to accept, he decides to distance himself. It is an important choice because it shows that Alex has finally understood what his values are and is no longer willing to betray them in order to feel part of something. But his most beautiful evolution concerns Jackie: he understands that she has always loved Cole and lets her go into his brother's arms. In fact, when Jackie and Cole separate, he even goes so far as to defend his brother because he knows the real reason he decided to leave her. It is a beautiful dynamic because it would have been very easy to turn Alex back into the romantic rival, but the series chooses a much more mature path. Alex does not need to sabotage Jackie's relationship to prove that he loves her; moreover, he also realizes that he wants his best friend, Kiley, by his side.
It's not just Jackie, Cole, and Alex: the world of the Walters finally becomes more interesting
The third season also works because it stops making everything revolve exclusively around the main triangle and allows the other storylines to breathe.
Danny's experiences and his relationship, as well as those of the other brothers and the Walter cousins, get more space and make Silver Falls feel even more alive. Particularly interesting is the introduction of the Walter cousins' mother, a figure completely different from Katherine: a more nomadic, independent mother, less rooted in everyday family life, who creates an interesting contrast with a woman who—despite having a thousand responsibilities and also having to look after her injured husband this season—is always extremely present for her children.
The Walters are one of the few families in contemporary teen dramas where the parents are truly parents. They are not perfect, but they are not intrusive and do not constantly try to control their children's lives, while still being there just the same. And this allows the kids to grow up with solid values without every conflict necessarily having to stem from a dysfunctional family.
On top of all this, there is a soundtrack that continues to be one of the series’s strong points, with “Running Home” by Jade LeMac quickly becoming one of the songs most associated with the season and perfect for accompanying one of the moments fans had been waiting for most: the kiss between Jackie and Cole.
It is a mix that makes the third season more complete: not just romance, not just triangles, but a coming-of-age story that finally gives its characters the space to become adults. The truth is that My Life with the Walter Boys no longer needs to keep asking, “Who will Jackie choose?” Now, it can finally tell us what happens when the characters have made their choice and have to learn to live with it.
