The past three seasons of The Diplomat have been nothing short of jaw-dropping. Each finale has been more shocking than the previous, and Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) has yet again found herself in a complicated position. Ensuring the safety of her marriage, her career, the fate of the country, and her own personal values has become a difficult balancing act. But the thrill of working in international relations and cutthroat politics hasn't worn off for her just yet.
There are still a lot of loose ends she wants to tie up, which is why her diplomatic mission has been extended once again. Here's everything we know about The Diplomat season 4.
Is The Diplomat coming back for season 4?
It's official: we're not done with this political drama just yet. Netflix has confirmed that The Diplomat will be returning for a fourth season.
This all makes sense, given the huge major cliffhanger season 3 ends on. Fans of the show will definitely want to know what's in store for the Wylers, the White House, and Downing Street as more geopolitical shenanigans take place—especially with power-hungry Grace Penny as the seated President.
What is The Diplomat season 4 going to be about?
Naturally, the fourth season is going to pick up where season 3 left off. [Some light spoilers head for the season 3 finale. Skip down to "who's coming back" if you want to avoid.] Kate, once again, comes to the knowledge of the nefarious acts of the administration she works for. And this time, her husband is involved as the current Vice President of the United States. Thanks to Hal's help, President Penny has—once again—covertly betrayed the U.K. in a very serious way by retrieving a deadly nuclear weapon from their waters.
The consequences of these decisions will definitely unfold in season 4. And series creator Debora Cahn said in an interview that fans “should be worried. There’s plenty to worry about.” She added, “It can be pretty chilling when you see who takes power and get the sense that they may be horrifically misusing it.”
Who's coming back from the cast?
It's certainly safe to assume that the show's main ensemble will make a return. Keri Russell will be playing Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as her husband (and now-VP) Hal Wyler, and the rest of the diplomatic mission's staff is expected to return as well. What is new is that Netflix has confirmed that The West Wing alums Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford will be returning as series regulars, playing the U.S. presidential couple, Grace and Todd Penn.
When will The Diplomat season 4 come out?
With the trailer, not only did we get our first official look of the new season, but we also found out The Diplomat season 4 will be released on October 15, 2026.
According to Netflix, “In Season Four of The Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home. Four Emmy nominees paint an unmissable portrait of two marriages: Keri Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn.”
