Heartstopper is over and, oh, it’s a movie now? Instead of a fourth season, Netflix and showrunner/creator Alice Oseman are rounding out the YA love story of Nick and Charlie with a movie called Heartstopper Forever. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is meant to be the conclusion of the series. There isn’t going to be a Heartstopper season 4. They got the ending they want, but is it actually over over?
The show, which began in 2022, follows secondary school students Nick and Charlie as they get to know each other, become friends, and slooooowly act on their developing mutual crush and then, finally, fall in love. Subsequent seasons expand on the stories of their respective friend groups and test their love through various conflicts–as to be expected. But it has always been thoughtful, empathetic, and sweet in a way that sometimes feels like a fantasy and other times feels like... yeah, just how it is!
Is there more story in the Heartstopper comics?
The Heartstopper Forever movie is an adaptation of the graphic novel’s fifth and final volume, as well as the novella “Nick and Charlie” that Oseman published in 2015. Unless they write more, which is always possible, this is it for Heartstoppper!
So the fourth season of Heartstopper that never was would probably have been the final season anyway. They got to tell the same story, just shorter. Better than nothing!
What have the folks involved said about Heartstopper ending?
Round up! Everyone is posting and everyone is full of gratitude for the journey. “This story has been the light of my life,” Oseman said on IG. “Thank you for watching.”
Joe Locke posted one BTS photo dump with the caption “All grown up” and another from the premiere captioned “Heartstopper forever and ever and ever and ever and ever.” The latter is also what Corinna Brown said in her IG photo dump.
“The last five years have been very good ones,” Kit Connor said in his post, “so so thankful for these people and this story.”
“A statement from ‘will gao’” reads a caption from Will Gao. He did in fact write a five slide NotesApp + BTS photo statement about his time on the series. “Over the last few months I’ve come to accept that like all good things,” he concludes.” Heartstopper must come to an end. We must let these characters go, and move on to the next thing now.”
Tobie Donovan went long in the caption: “And with [Heartstopper Forever], the end of the most incredible 5 year journey. At the close of this chapter, my overriding feeling is gratitude. For the people I got to experience it with and love dearly, the people who made it possible for me to be a part of it, and the people who enjoyed it and championed it so much. I think it’s going to take me at least another 5 years to process all of this, but I just wanted to say thank you. I’ve loved every single second of it.”
So did Yasmin Kinney in her post: “Looking back at these memories made me so emotional. I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of something so special. Elle, you’ll always inspire me to keep going. You rise above any transphobia simply by living your life authentically, with kindness, love, and joy. That’s a reminder I carry with me every day. At a time when so many trans people feel scared and uncertain, stories like Heartstopper give us hope. They remind us that we deserve to be seen, loved, and celebrated, and that brighter days are ahead.”
“i kind of cant put into words how much heartstopper has changed my life,” said Kizzy Edgell’s post, in conclusion. “its been such a constant light in my life for the last five years and has built my confidence as a queer person and an actor so much. filled my camera roll & my heart. go watch heartstopper forever to see us say goodbye.”
