There is loads of advice out there for passengers looking to bag a free seat upgrade when travelling abroad, with tips ranging from travelling at peak times on over-booked flights and avoiding pre-selecting your seats.

And while, whichever method you choose, getting upgraded is usually just a matter of luck, one airline is trying to reward passengers with a new scheme.

Monarch has introduced a system where 'nice' passengers will be given seat upgrades, usually giving extra legroom and priority boarding.

The free upgrades are at the airline's discretion and will be awarded to passengers for polite behaviour, giving them 15% extra legroom worth a cost of over £100 for two.

Nils Christy, Chief Operating Officer at Monarch told the Daily Mail: "We are often described as the nicer airline and holiday company and we pride ourselves on this. Our customer services staff are already nice – now they can reward those who are positively nice to them too.

"Everyone benefits from niceness. Planes depart more punctually, staff and customers are happier and it improves the travelling experience for everyone."

So, there you go! Forget dressing in your smartest clothes or pretending it is your honeymoon - travel with Monarch and a smile and a thank you might be all it takes to bag yourself a more comfortable flight.
