We're living in comfy clog-mania, and our feet are loving it. What is it about suede slip-on clogs that is just so appealing? Blame it on our shift towards all things comfort, firmly established during the pandemic era, or the rise of uglycore fashion, especially popular in the shoe department – think tabi-toe ballet trainers or blinged-out crocs – but the closed-toe mule shoe has become a surprising mainstay of every stylish wardrobe.

Similar to chore jackets and cargo trousers, clogs originated as practical footwear for industrial and agricultural workers before becoming fashionable, beloved by the boho babes of the 1970s. Birkenstock debuted the flat shoe Boston clog that same decade, and although the brand has encountered unjust connotations in the past (Hippie Granola crunchers, anyone?), in recent years, they have truly had us fashion folk in a chokehold. Especially the closed-toe, buckle strap, and supple moulded footbeds of the Boston, hailed as a trusty staple, both affordable and supportive.

For me, when I think of Birk's Boston suede clogs, I envision a cool, fashionable artist who makes ceramics and lives on the coast. They spark a laidback cottagecore way of life. Comfy, classic, effortless. The natural materials and soft, earthy hues associated with a suede clog are in keeping with their relaxed energy. But even with the outdoorsy vibe, they attract both city and countryside tribes well. The slip-on ease lets you be out the door in seconds, moseying through rolling fields in a breezy maxi dress juxtaposed with the practical, bulky clog silhouette. City dwellers prove the shoe's versatility, pairing the suede clogs with slouchy track bottoms or barrel-leg jeans as part of an effortless day-to-day uniform.

Whether you pair them with a marble ribbed wool sock and cotton shorts or go sockless with a high summer dress, the comfy footbed has you covered from day to night.
